Anybody use midi clock extensively?

How is it performing for you?

to what are you clocking?

Start and stop to a daw or from a daw. Also lfos, time delays, tempo, etc.

this is MMC midi machine control, not midi clocking

All syncing in PT is a pain in the ass.

Why? Is the sync off?

Rogue, is the midi clock off? It's very important to me.

All I use is Midi clock. I have never used MTC.
I have my MPC 4000 connected to a digital multitrack recorder, and keyboards and drum machines and to my ever important edirol UM-550.

It all works perfectly and I have no timing troubles whatsoever. Sometimes I use the digital clock SPDIF as my source and just Midi Machine Control. So it depends...

The MPC4000 is tight, and so are the Roland Multitrack recorders(1880, 2000, 2480)

What questions do you have?

I had great sync results with the 2480. I dont have it anymore. I use Ableton Live and Protools. My studio is going to be down for another month. Is the sync off on those 2 daws?

...there's no need for mtc or mmc....a simple midi clock does the job....

i'm clocking mpc's for years as slaves of a logic setup and it's tight, running smooth, always knowing where to start.....

with the old 2000 i had one little problem......the note offs where not that tight as programmed in free willy mode.....

and because my grooves often depend on tight ending cuts of a sound the groove was missing a bit in slave mode....

that's not the case with nukai machines....

can't say anything about the internal lfo's of mpc though......but there not really syncable anyway.....and must be adjusted anyway once the mpc is slave....

mpc as a master, at least when it comes to sync all traditional daws, is, well, a pain in the ass.....

That's good to hear with logic. I've been reading quite a few horror stories on the net with pt. I need to sync other hardware lfos, etc and I would like to use the 4000 between them. I have about 5 pieces that need to sync.

You guys are actually making me more nervous with your guys defensiveness. I didn't ask about nukai or mmc.

Ableton seems to work.

it seems to me that you don't even realize which feature you are asking about.

Good communication requires people to try to understand the question. Even if worded or said differently. Go ahead and feel "right" Its ok with me.

MMC stands for MIDI Machine Control. Its designed for controlling the transport on tape and multitrack machines. If the multi-track was the MMC master,  you press "play" on the multitrack, the sequencer will start.  Or in the example below, if you make the sequencer the MMC master, pressing play will start the multi-track.    MMC really just controls the transport and sends a locate point--not the timing; its just a switch that says "Go here, then start, stop, rewind, fast forward".  What you do to complete the picture is send MTC from the MMC slave.

MIDI Clock is yet another option, not to be confused with MTC, though they are similar.  Originally, MIDI clock sync was just a bunch of blips that told devices when to start, stop, continue and follow the tempo of the master device.  This is perfect for making synths and samplers  synchronize their LFOs,  and effects delay time. It also passes tempo which is important when syncing arpeggiators, drum loops and other time based sounds

well then to answer your original question.

midi beat clock worked well for me always, with the exception on Ableton Live.

I had good results with cubase, digital performer, and hardware multitrackers.
Working with Ableton live I always experienced significant drift, originating from Live, not the mpc.

I never used MTC, so I cannot comment.

MMC worked as it should with all software and hardware I experimented with.
