The MPC is not really a beginner's machine. Don't let the MPC 1000 fool you. How well versed are you in sequencing? You say you are new to hardware, what is your software background? As with most sequencers, the MPC is not a difficult machine to use if you have used other sequencers. Its like driving a car. You can learn on a gremlin. When you move up to a BMW, its gonna be a lot more advanced than your Gremlin but you already know how to drive. You just need to learn how to operate that particular car.
That being said, the MPC is not exactly a difficult machine to use, especially if you are patient enough to read the manual. Really, it boils down to what features you want. The MPC 60 is a classic with a great sound, but limited in its feature set. The 3000 is like a 60 with "better" sound, effects and more memory. The MPC 2000/xl is also a great machine. do a general search around the forums and I'm sure you will find grips of information about the differences between the machines. The 1000 is a nice compact machine with lots of features for its price/size.
