1.4 feature list / fixes / etc

A followup from Akai

Being the diligent DJ hacks that were are, we always send our reviews in for fact checking. Thankfully, the review slipped through reasonably unscathed, but a couple of issues we discovered have actually been fixed in the forthcoming v1.4 software update. So rather than wait to revisit particular parts, Akai have given us the exclusive look at what the next version of the software will bring. It’s good to see that Akai are constantly evolving the features and rapidly fixing the bugs.

Version 1.4 (April 2013) New features

64-bit support for PC/Mac. The standalone application, VST and Audio Unit plugins now have 64-bit versions.
Ability to load samples when playing.
Ability to export return buses.
Auto-save function (see preferences window).
Control surface buttons auto-repeat when you hold them down (useful for zoom, locate, etc).
Quick bank/mode selection via button double-tap. You can double-tap shift to enter “shift lock” mode. You can also double-tap bank/mode buttons directly.
Akai Professional is continually updating and enhancing the MPC experience. This document lists the new features, fixes and improvements made to your MPC software.

MPC Release Notes 1

Multiple file selection in file browser.
New file browser folder button behavior. The 1-5 buttons retain their stored location when you move away from them; the location can be set by press-and-hold.
QLink control of zoom and scroll in the sample editor.
Added a sample overview in sample editor.
LCD sample editor supports zoom and scroll.
MIDI clock receive.
Ability to alphabetically sort the samples list (see button over the Sample list)
New command history window, with the ability to drag the undo position around (Edit>History…).
Holding shift at startup skips any autoload files.

Improvements

Improved performance when switching sequences suddenly. No more dropped beats!
Improved display of events in the track view.
Grids and lists show when they have lost focus.
Title bar shows “+” when the project has unsaved changes.
Updated the UI in many other areas.
Click and drag in grid headers to audition a range of events.
Track view supports region select across multiple tracks.
Undo/redo buttons on toolbar.
Effects selection has updated UI, with sort by vendor/type.
Rationalize track types.
You can now assign “no program” to a track.
Optimization and performance improvements for better workflow.
Fixed many bugs.
Fix MIDI sync send.
Fixed hardware screen corruption issues.

The 1.4 features that signifcantly improves my use of the Ren are:

1. Sample overview! Love this. The Ren is starting to feel like working in Recycle!

2. Qlink zoom and scroll. Another big step to making the Ren the best sampling/sample editing workstation.

3. File browser. Maintaining my short-cuts is key to my workflow.

4. No more dropped beats. A big one! In Next Sequence Mode, triggering different sequences always drops the first beat in 1.3.

5. Track view supports region select across multiple tracks. This comes in handy. It allows you to use the Ren more and more like a traditional DAW where you can edit across multiple tracks if you want. I prefer this over having to create multiple sequenes and string them together. Plus using this feature, I maintain Track Mixer settings

Hmmm, I wonder what they mean by "Rationalize track types"

Still hoping for FX plugin automation and multicore support soon (and qlink sequencing)

It's coming along and it's starting to remind me of when I pre-ordered Maschine and had to sit through all the updates before it was any where near decent.
I do feel there are a lot of things at the core of the sequencer that are right... I just can't wait until a year or two from now to see where it's at. At this rate I guess it will be a pretty amazing piece of kit by then....but I'm impatient and there is still a ton missing.

...but don't get me wrong this looks like a lot of great stuff coming and I'm very happy about it.

does anyone who has tested know if midi notes still hang when using 3rd party plugins?

See some much needed workflow improvements for me .

It's definitely coming along nicely now. It's the small workflow improvements that are really making it a better experience - that's the key IMO, fix the core features first and then add 'bells and whistles' one at a time.

Indeed .If they keep on this pace by 1.6 or 1.7 I can see great things happening .

This feature was actually available in 1.0-1.2...then disappeared in 1.3. I'm glad it's back. My brother was distraught about this lol.

This update is definitely about tightening up workflow.

It's hard to pick which of these improvements are my favorite. They are aiming high with these updates. It's great.

Does this mean that when You load a program from the hardware, that program is playable right then without leaving the browser tab?
