Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

hey people,

i've searched the internet time and time over without any information on the issue i'm having, except for when someone asked this question in a forum and the only reply he got was "never use the resampling function in the 2000xl, it sucks" - was thinking i might get more insight than that here.

basically, last night i sampled a break into my 2000xl. then resampled it to 12-bit, 10,000hz, low quality.

once it's done, the new sample is way faster than it originally was. is there any trick to not having this happen? the break definitely sounds more rugged after the resample, but just had been sped up to about 10 times the original speed.

any help would be much appreciated! thanks in advance to anyone who gives me some advice.

yup, it effectively changes the playback speed. You have to adjust the tuning afterwords to compensate. it can't play the 10,000Hz at normal speed. The lowest you could do is 11,025Hz and play this with a tuning a -240(24 semitones). The other thing is if you can just take that 10,000hz and resample it again at 44,100hz.

thanks for the reply man. so is it just a tuning adjustment that's required, and not a time-stretch?

what i was trying to do was emulate the sp1200 (haha). the drums definitely did sound way more how i wanted them to sound despite the fact they were sped right up.

apparently the sp1200 is 12-bit, 26,040hz. so in theory if i sampled at these rates i would need to detune it to -100ish after?

another question about your last sentence - if i took that same sample and resampled back to 44,100hz, would that take care of the speed thing (i.e. return it to its original speed), yet keep the sample sounding like it did at 10,000hz?

ive found that if the Tuning has been adjusted in the Trim screen parameters and i then resample then it does change the speed and makes it really fast

but if the tuning is as 0 and i resample it stays the same, i dont know if that will help!

proper confused me when it happened to me though lol

yes the sp1200 is 26040hz
i think the sp 12 is 27500hz
22050hz is another common one too, i think someone told me thats the s900/950's

if this is true this is really interesting and good to know.

having said that, you really are wasting time with the resample function in the machine. in the time it takes to resample there, you could actually re-sample the file yourself (maybe at a higher pitch, then pitch it down in the machine like has been popularised by the old samplers), or you could transfer to / from your computer and do the resampling there.

the resampling in the xl doesn't add much to the sound, but if you do it at some non-standard rate, the anti-aliasing filter will not work and you will get all sorts of ringing.

still, the time it takes is just so ridiculous. i measured it took 20 minutes to reduce a 4-second sample at the right settings.

numbers. only numbers, nothing more. Don't trust on rates and depth numbers if you looking for a sound. Trust ONLY your ears.

i never said if you sample using them numbers then it will sound like them machines.. im just saying what them machines sample at, i got the 2000xl and resample at 26040 and it sounds nothing like what i get using my sp1200 lol

Cause it isn't 12-bit, wasn't recorded in through the SP AD convertors, etc.
