1) Crop/Truncate
2) Detect/set BPM based on loop markers
3) Lock in a start/end point (let's say 1 bar) and then be able to drag that 1 bar segment throughout the sample to chop out 1 bar regions of an entire song

I think you can do all three of these already, but maybe they don't work the way you'd expect. If you can think of a more intuitive way to make this work, please let me know!

1) Crop/truncate - look for the little red and blue handles in the corners of the waveform and drag them.

2) Detect/set BPM based on loop markers - If you toggle looping over (for example) a 4 beat segment, then go into the Time Stretching window, you can tell it that the loop is 4 beats long, then click "Calculate BPM from Loop". Should do exactly what you want... but maybe there should be a more obvious way.

3) After you toggle looping over a slice, you can drag the highlighted grey part of the loop bar around and it'll move the adjoining slice points. So for example, you can mark out a 4 beat segment and then drag that around as sort of a template, saving good chops as you find them.

Again, I'm not totally happy with the way all of this stuff works right now, it should be easier, but I haven't come up with a better way so if anyone has ideas, I'm all ears.

Thanks!!

Hey guys, just another note to say that BeatCleaver 1.3.1 is now out, which incorporates a bunch of feedback from this thread!

New features are:
  • MIDI Controller Support
  • Snap to Zero option
  • 2ms Fade in/out for slices
  • Samplerate export options in the preferences (you can pick the samplerate to save your slices as eg. 48000 Hz)

I wrote up more details on the blog here!

Thanks for all the feedback, and I think you'll like what I'm working on for BeatCleaver 1.4. :)

This is shaping up real nice Al! :smoker:

I'll grab this later. Just one request which I don't think is currently possible...

It'd be very handy if there was a user-definable normalise option per slice. Most of the time I wouldn't use it, but I'm tracking a lot of single hit drums to tape and then back into the computer, and some of the levels are coming back in a bit funky. It would speed up the process of levelling and chopping the stem up, rather than having to dip into other software. Cheers.

and

Would it be possible to crop sample by the start and end points.. Nice to drag whole songs in, but i usually have to chop/crop my loop in another program then import it into to beatcleaver

Thank You for the great program!! Very happy with it!

Thanks sbtst6! :)

Oh yeah, a quick way to sample pitch is a good idea. I actually used to have that way back in the day in a pre-release version of BeatCleaver but I ended up scrapping it (long story). Could be time for that to make a comeback though!

Re: Trimming - If you grab the little red and blue handles at the top corners of the waveform view, you should be able to "trim" a sample like that. Does that work differently from what you want to be able to do?

@asantoni.

The sample pitch is needed the more that is use the program!!! The ability to slow down the sample on the main page would help alot!!!

as for the trim option i was probably looking for a way to crop the loop..But i have just been using drag and drop feature to put the loop(s) on the desktop then back into another instance of beatcleaver for further chopping :)

That is some snazzy looking software!

Its funny how almost like the MPC (formerly) being a sampling drum machine,
there just aren't that many software's that serve such a basically desirable function.

Not easily, cleanly and well at least.

Hey guys,

I've been letting some of these ideas that you guys came up with in this thread stew in my head for a bit (like ADSR and Coz's user-defined normalize per slice), and I think I've come up with a way to do them.

I started working on an "Edit Mode" for BeatCleaver a few weeks ago that'll let you highlight different regions and make non-destructive edits to them. The way it works is kind of like in-between how Audacity works and how automation works in a DAW, hopefully combining the best of both worlds. (I don't know of any other WAVE editor that works quite like this, but maybe this isn't a new idea...)

Anyways, rather than keeping everything super secret until it's finished, I figured it might be better to start a discussion about this stuff now while it's still eearly in development so I can make sure I build features you guys actually want.

To kick things off, I've busted out my nerdy suburbanite voice and made a quick 3 minute overview of how "Edit Mode" in BeatCleaver 1.4 is going to work (so far)...

Does that approach make sense? What do you think? What other types of edits would be good to have?

Thanks!
Albert

props !
i'm gonna download the demo and give feedback
i'm sometime pissed at recycle for not offering edit possibilities (and being expensive)

Liking what i see in the edit mode!!

Would like a pitch adjustment on the main screen in 1.4! :)

Been using this program like a swiss army knife!

Time for a new devlog video for BeatCleaver!
(if I shoulda made a new thread instead of bumping this one, let me know)

In this one, I'm showing off new "gain" and "duplicate" edits, the latter of which lets you copy and move slices around so you can start to make variations on beats in BeatCleaver. I showed a couple other little features but I've been trying to keep the videos short so I hope I didn't go too fast. :)

sbtst6: I got a few words for you at the end of this new devlog video, showing where I think I might put the pitch/timestretch controls on the main window. (spoiler: at the bottom)

If you guys have any feedback or thoughts on what you're seeing in the video, please let me know!

Thanks,
Albert

:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D The pitch in the main window!

You even added something that i long forgot about and wished that recycle and other slicers could do, and that is the duplication of slices!

Thank You! Looking forward to 1.4!!

The stuff in the video looks good Al.

I tried the demo after my last post and just couldn't gel wit the app to be honest. I meant to leave some feedback but got sidetracked and forgot.

I'll keep checking the updates to see how things are progressing. 8)

Hey no worries, though I'm curious why it didn't gel with you so I can fix it or improve things.

You know when you're making music and you get "tired ears"? The same thing happens to me when I'm designing stuff. Sometimes something will feel weird but then I'll just get too used to it and never give it a second thought which is bad, and I need someone like you to come along and make me realize what's wrong again.

Thanks again!

Bear in mind I only tinkered with it for 10 minutes and this was a few weeks ago...

The first thing I didn't like was how every time you click on the waveform the loop starts playing. I think there was some kind of ruler above the waveform that would achieve what I wanted, but I found this a bit fiddly.

Also, the zooming was super smooth with the Magic Trackpad, but I found that as I was zooming in, the waveform would magnify towards both the left and right equally rather than to a fixed point. So to zoom into the start of a transient I was having to push two fingers vertically and then gradually push diagonally. It just didn't feel natural. Pinch to zoom may be a better solution?

Those were the things that stood out as not feeling quite there yet.

I just downloaded the trial a little bit ago and have been toying around with it for a few hours now. I just want to say that this program is a huge help for me. A lot of what I do comes from self-made sampling, which means that there are a lot of times where I end up with huge waves from long sessions. Editing these things in Logic has been ever so torturous (might just be me...) so, having BeatCleaver + Audacity on my Windows laptop works wonders.

Just wanted to say thank you for your work. I really hope the money you are getting from purchases has been enough to help ya keep moving forward! After I get a little more play-time with it, I'm sure I'll be buying it soon.

Thanks again

Peace!
