Apologies if this has been covered before...
I'm resurrecting an MPC60-II, bought from eBay. One new backlight later, I found that the encoder only incremented, whichever way it was turned. I also didn't see any stock of new encoders, so I took it apart and fixed it.
Steps:
- Turn off the MPC and disconnect it from the mains.
- Remove the data wheel knob.
- Remove screws and open the case. I propped it up vertically with everything still connected, but you need to take care doing this.
- Disconnect the encoder from the top panel.
- With a long pair of adjustable pliers, I very gently loosened the nut holding the encoder in place. One it was moving freely, I unscrewed it with my fingers. Grab the encoder from the other side when the nut is off.
- There are now four 'clamps' holding the encoder together (one of mine was glued, but it came apart anyway). You can prise them apart with care and a small screwdriver, at which time the casing will separate - *BUT*:
- There is a *tiny* ball bearing which will fall out. This gives the encoder the click. Catch it and put it to one side in a safe place.
- You'll then see the track. I took a very thin flat swab with Deoxit and cleaned it thoroughly. Make sure you clean the inner track too.
- To make sure it was working, I reconnected the encoder back to the board and left it hanging, then powered the MPC on and tested it. *BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU DO THIS* - you can kill your MPC, or worse, yourself - there are dangerous exposed voltages. The first time I did this, it incremented one way only but not the other, so I cleaned it again. 2nd time lucky.
- When it works, it's time for reassembly. Tip the base of the encoder on the side. That ball bearing goes in the small recess.
- Gently push the two halves together and hold them there. If you've done it right, your encoder will click again.
- Force back the clamps until the two halves are secure together.
- Put the encoder back - it's keyed, so it'll slot in (although there are two ways you can assemble the casing, so I'm wondering if you can be left with the wiring the wrong way - I didn't check this).
- Screw in the nut and tighten it.
- Replace case screws.
