I'm sorry but I have to laugh. Pete Rock pioneered tons of beats and is a staple to Hip Hop music. I'm from that era and know Primo was second to Pete Rock.

Matter of fact, if you can find it, because it only exists on cassette and vinyl, check out the Mecca and The Soul Brother Bonus Remix on the LP. Doesn't exist anywhere else, but if you find it, it'll blow you away, that was Pete at his prime.

And wasn't Pete Rock that showed Primo what a sampler was?

I dont think theres much wrong with e sampling but downliading something from another producers sample-ography is lame...breaks yeah cool but copping some ogs used samples is pointless imo

I think, like someone else noted that, that a lot of the op's pointers are pretty darn obvious you can tella layered drum from a regular one and a loop from chop and im pretty sure the golden era used a blend of those techniques depending on source and equipment (ill green )

I think petestrumentals proves that Pete has musical understanding beyond just "beats". Two good beats my ass. You vs Pete Rock, same samples, we would see who makes the heads nod.

Pete Rocks definitely got more than 2 good beats but i sort of get what the dudes trying to say i listen to about 5 pete rock songs regularly the rest i could give a sh*t less his catalogue is pretty f*ckin boring imo and hes a lame rapper...i get his contribution and pioneer status but i dont listen to any of the cl smooth lps and some of the new stuff is good on 1st listen but has minimal playback in my collection...no hate

It's probably because your listening to recent stuff, idk. It may be an acquired taste and I honestly don't listen to them often, but they are still good. Ok, back to the myths!

Nah i have heard a lot of p r old and new i used to bump older stuff years ago but i dont really bump much early 90s stuff at all anymore might be my age but my golden era was a bit later like 96-99 more rawkus and loud than def jam and elektra

Anyone insane enough to criticize Premier or Pete Rock is obviously trying to get a rise out of people or simply likes Modern Bling Rap and not Hip Hop. There is a huge difference between the garbage put out now and the 90's stuff. 90ship hop is a special time equivalent to the 60s for Rock n Roll. when mainstream was epmd, rakim, wu tang redman etc...Remember when you looked forward to releases?? I remember hitting up the used stores for tapes and getting das efx, brand nubian, black moon!! Damn, i get happy then depressed at the same time thinking about it

Now i would say Gang Starr is doper than Pete rock and Cl Smooth as a group. But i believe Gang Starr is the best group in hip hop history hands down. when you talk about beats rhymes and cuts i don't know how it gets doper than Gang Starr.
