Since there were no instructions provided with your display, i'll be posting a couple of photos that will show how it all fits into place- and the handy technique I found that really helps fix the nuts onto the other side of those bolts, using a piece of blu-tac (which will of course be included in the kits :)

But still. If I compare the photos and their angles to my original 950 LCD its "night and day". The original 950 LCD can be viewed best from something like 45 degree from above. As soon as your eyes are directly in front the contrast is really bad and if the unit is above the eyes there is nothing to read on the display.

So I guess with these new displays the viewing angle has to be extreme to not be able to read it.

Peter - I had almost forgotten how bad the viewing angle can be on the original S950 display. Well I can absolutely guarantee a massive improvement there.

Each colour has a slightly different viewing range, but here's how it is with these displays:
At eye level - perfect viewing
Below eye level - perfect viewing at the same contrast setting as 'at eye level'
Above eye level - not quite as good, but you can compensate by adjusting contrast. Only at massive extremes, when the display is far below eye level, does it become an issue. But we are talking about angles that would make it difficult to operate the sampler at anyway.
So these displays are very, very forgiving if the sampler is near eye level or above eye level - which is the most comfortable way to operate it anyway. I will put up some photos of some extreme angles to give you an idea of how forgiving they are, but it's a massive improvement.

Before any fitting / viewing angle pics, here's the last of the colours for now, the orange on black. Other colours can be obtained on request, i'll give a list shortly. There is also a black text / white background model that I will be showing soon, I will probably stock that colour.

This orange on black display, despite the photos, is a better looking display to the red/black model. The text is brighter, and I find it better to read in all conditions than the red model.

Here's a very basic set of photos, just to show how these new displays fit to your sampler.

Because the new displays are slightly thicker than the original display, the new display sits BEHIND the mounting brackets, instead of on top of them.

For this I provide nuts and bolts in the kit, to secure the display perfectly in place. And I found a great method of easily fitting the nuts to the bolts, even though they are tricky to get to - by sticking the nut to a piece of Blu-Tac :) (...all will make sense soon)

Once the display is bolted in place, the two way connecting cable connects to the header P401 on the front panel. This also disconnects the power to the Akai's inverter (since it is not needed now) and therefore puts a stop to any high-pitched noise that sometimes comes from that component.

Spare nuts, bolts, and cable ties are also included.

I am working on a detailed fitting guide right now, this is just to show the basics - i'll be back soon!

How the old display fits - held in place by 3 screws - don't forget to turn the power OFF before poking around inside the Akai!

Hey Clint - thanks! The only thing that seemed fiddly was attaching the nuts to the other side of those bolts you see. But as will become apparent, sticking the nut to a piece of blu-tac enables you to hold it just in the right place to screw that bolt into it :idea:

Hey folks, thanks for all the kind words, I really appreciate them. I wanted to let you know that the display kits are now totally ready to go, for the S950 at least. I'll be confirming the operation in an S900 very soon.

VIEWING ANGLE

So, I just wanted to clarify a couple of things about these new displays, and show you some photos of what I mean.

These are not vacuum fluorescent (VFD) or OLED displays. They are the latest LCD displays, and are illuminated by LEDs behind the display.

Because of the way they work, on the displays with a black background, it's not possible for that black background to be totally black, especially at large viewing angles. The bigger the viewing angle, the more illumination you will see 'bleed' into the display.

OLED displays do offer a perfect black background, but they suffer from screen burn (wear as the pixels that are illuminated most often start to fade). Blue on black OLED displays suffer most here, and they really need some kind of screensaver control in software to switch them off when not in use. With an S900/950, that's not an option.

VFDs are the other display type that offers great contrast and perfect black background. They are a lot more expensive though. They too suffer from wear, their lifespan is better than OLED, but it can still be a problem. To give you a rough idea, I have a Lexicon FX unit with a VFD display that was switched on constantly for 2 years, by which time the pixels are very uneven. There's a sort of screensaver built into the Lexicon, but it just switches between different pages of text, so it still burns the display out.

These LCD displays offer a good compromise. They are still a massive improvement on the original, the contrast is great, and they can be viewed in bright light or total darkness. They don't suffer from any noticable screen burn and they have the longest expected lifespan of any display. Especially with a machine like an S950 where the display spends most of its life displaying the same line of text.

This colour bleed only affects displays with black or dark backgrounds, it does not affect the white/ocean blue of the black on orange displays. (You still need to adjust the contrast on those, of course, depending on what your viewing angle is)

At a comfortable operating angle, with the sampler somewhere near eye level, it's not going to be an issue. It's only an issue at large viewing angles, which would be uncomfortable to operate the sampler at anyway, regardless of what display type you had.
