how would you suggest I hook them all up? :hmmm:

In theory, if I was to put drums on the s950, bass on s5000, and lets say sample on the 2500 and put them through my efx rack and then onto my 16 track R2R... would would be the simplest solution to connect all 8 outs from each sampler and re-arrange what ones I use...

so that sounded difficult to understand... all i want to know is how to connect all 8 outputs and be able to select what ones i want to use running into my 16 track recorder with out monkey switching wires all the time....


my only solution so far... buy 2 patch bays and plug all of the outs into one of them and then use the second patch bay for my efx and so on...

Get a mixer and a patchbay for more flexible routing.

I need to do something like this myself, so planning your routing out on paper will be a big help. Im surprised there isn't some kind of 'App' to help with signal routing plans...There are some good articles on using patchbays on the Sound on Sound website.

also remember that just because a sampler has 8 outputs doesn't mean you need to use more than just the main outs... you mentioned only wanting to use one for drums and another for bass... so no need to spend a bunch of money routing channels you may never get around to using... just saying.

So draw up a plan to find the best ways to approach this. But if your plans are likely to change often or in future, a mixer and patchbay can't be beat. Think about patching in insert FX, , send FX, filters, compressors, samplers, audio interfaces, Reel-to-Reel etc etc.

Without a good plan of attack, thing can get messy (and noisy) very quickly. Not to mention the constant repatching and neck/backache. If you're going to invest the money, it pays to think slightly ahead of your immediate needs.

If you do end up wanting access to all ouputs, in different configurations at different times, a patchbay is probably the way to go.

I don't really like patchbays though, in terms of long term reliability, they get dirty contacts and do not make good connections after a while.

I would prefer a programmable patchbay/switcher, something like these...

Another option, a digital mixer with internal patching matrix. I used to have a Yamaha 01V, upgraded to the Yamaha 02R, followed by a Mackie D8B all of which performed admirably. These can be picked up quite cheaply these days and benefit from internal FX, dynamics, EQ, programmable scene memory, moving faders, DAW control etc etc.

Saves needing to buy each element seperately, and cuts down on clutter and space requirements. All routing/patching takes place in the digital domain = low noise compared to analog connections. May be overkill for some, but a good option nonetheless.

My problem is wanting to use quality separate components for each step in the signal path, good DIs/mic pres/ad converters, so it ends up taking up too much space, and creating a lot of clutter.
