I've only had crashes while saving and being in Song mode. I feel bad for you having so much problems with the thing! Hopefully you're able to solve this mess somehow!

No, it doesn't corrupt, fortunately.

Fresh MPC install, yes.

Fresh OS install, no. Updated from 10.6.8 to 10.8.3.
Wouldn't like to go there – yet. Fuxxing with all the software probs has already eaten up so much time and energy, and I know re-installing the OS would take some more. Maybe later in the summer when I've got a little more time in my hands.

Your problem could be related to something the MPC Software doesn't like in the Mac OS X preferences, or other OS files, that might not necessarily be changed with an OS update rather than a fresh install.

I would do a fresh Mac OS X install, and fresh MPC Software install, onto an external drive if you don't want to mess with your internal drive at the moment. It doesn't take that long.

I don't think that an OS update is really a final troubleshooting step, I wouldn't stop there and blame the MPC Software completely.

TBH with all the problems you are having, it seems counter productive that you would not try a fresh OS install - surely the hour or so it takes to do this is worth it compared to losing your work constantly?

Simply do it in the way I said previously - install the fresh OS on a separate external drive. This way you don't mess up your primary install and you don't have to re-install all your apps - only the MPC app. Boot up your Mac while holding down the option key and select your external drive as the temporary boot disk. By the end of the evening, you should know if this solves the problem.

Irregardless of price or equipment or anything, you shouldn't have to do any of this to make music and do something you enjoy. Period. BUT, you definitely shouldn't have to do any of this to use the Ren, at all. This sounds painful. Reinstall OS? Update OS? Install OS on an external HD? This is ridiculous. How about you turn the thing on and just make music?

And no hate towards Akai or the Ren at all but, I wouldn't get any hopes up, especially in your case, that an incremental update in 1.4 is going to suddenly wipe away all the problems. It won't. And that's no shots at Akai, this is just reality. It's damn near impossible to squash all of these issues in one update.

If you are going to keep the Ren, that's great but if you are looking to make headache free music, in your case and many others, you are probably going to have to look into another more stable option. At least for the time being. It's better than pulling your own teeth out. Don't make yourself feel that YOU have to make it work just because you bought it. It's going to drive you crazy. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Find something that does and enjoy making music again.

Sometimes when software gets screwed up, the only way is a full OS/application reinstall.

Doesn't really matter what it is.

He seems to be having a lot more crashes than other users on here, other users do not seem to be reporting as much crashing when saving.

I don't think it is a typical problem related to the general stability of the MPC Software, sounds more like something in the computer has gotten screwed up that the MPC Software doesn't like.

Updating the OS was really a waste of time, it really needs a fresh OS/application install to rule that out as a possible cause.

I've realized that merging all sequences into one definitely has an effect on crashing...it's hardly crashing anymore.

you should probably prepare a list of features that crash ren and avoid using them. sometimes less is more.

Uh, that'd be pretty much anything, as you may have read on this forum.
Saving is often the culprit for me – or, that makes the Ren crash.
Actually, earlier I found out that DMGAudio's EQuick plugin seemed to do it, and they were looking into it, agreeing that it might be the cause, but it's in Akai's hands now, and afaik they haven't said anything about it yet.
Even though I'm still using EQuick, as soon as I merged all sequences into one, the crash-upon-save scenario hasn't reoccurred.

DJ Hellfire wrote:Are you using the emulator plugins on individual tracks? If so, try removing them and see if it helps. This has been causing issues in beta testing as well.

Well, in fact, the song I was working on today – which seems to crash a lot when copying sequences; had only one sequence, and often crashed when i duplicated it – did, but I removed it, copied a sequence, and crash, again.

So far it seems like I can do anything in one sequence, make it as complex as I wish, but as soon as I start copying sequences, I get the crashes.
If only using markers was way more convenient, I'd be happy to be using only one sequence, but now it is clumsy. That's being discussed in the improvements forum.

Unfortunately there is a whole crap load of stuff happening when you copy a sequence so it could be a multitude of bugs inside that whole process. I hope they can dig in and figure it out. The should probably slow the process down intentionally so the computer isn't trying to do it all at once.

Hope this has been addressed in 1.4 for your sake at least.
