I'm going to be getting a 1000. What would be a good price for a black model with no upgrades? Naturally I would be adding upgrades later. I'm wondering if I should get one through Guitar Center.

Thanks

One other thing I was wondering about. Ram. Does the the Ram limit mean you can use up to a certain amount in a project or song that streams from your cf card, hard drive or whatever non-volitile memory you use?
I understand that the ram limit is 128 MB with an upgrade and it's volatile memory.

Nothing streams, it's loaded into the 128MB ram. So you have 128mb to work with.

I might go for an MPC 5000 instead. I need to think about it a bit. Would love to have a synth in the box.

...the 5000 is a monster.
heavy, big and never brought to an end.....lot's of unfinished business in there....
and the synth is just an alesis aeon....you get those as a slick stand alone keyboard version under 200 bucks....if you want a synth, buy one....
and there is no jjos for the 5000...

...the old real akai mpcs got not enough ram capabilities in these days....
and there is no jjos for old mpcs....

...and the ren is no real mpc....and will never be....simple as that.
and there is no jjos for the ren....

the real deal is a 2500.....
and a 1000 is nothing but a 2500...only smaller...slicker...sexier...
so hell yeah, he 1000 is the best choice...

and there IS A JJOS for these two....

and jjos is a must.

128 mb of ram is way more than you might think it is.....

i use mpcs since 93.....and my all black wooden side panels blackblue screen jjos pimped mpc 1000 is the best i can imagine....

Don't get the 5000 for the synth.

you'd be better off with a 1000 or 2500, with JJOS, combined with a Microkorg or something.

Mike at MPCStuff is a solid guy and their service is great. But it's a niche market so prices are a little high. If you can live without different colored LED's or would do your own, it would be cheaper to source a unit yourself and just buy some pads and buttons. If you're not soldering general MPC interior stuff is not too hard. Just a lot of screws and you need to be careful like working on a PC.

To the OP's question, currently a Black 1000 with the newer sensor/pads should be no more than $600, and that will likely have the 128MB already in. If not compatible RAM can be had for like $10 mail order. And I'm quoting Guitar Center used prices so person to person/craigslist you might do better.
