I just got the "free" Pro Tools Express disc and iLok package in the mail last week after contacting Akai. After going through the hassle of registering the iLok, registering the software and installing it I found out that it only works with a few Avid audio interfaces such as the mbox 3rd gen.,etc. The irony is that all of the compatible ones listed on their site already include PTE! I'm stuck with a useless dongle and software! I had read that new versions of ProTools allowed you to use any audio interface and even the built-in core audio.

What a waste.

Are you saying version of pro tools akai gave out isnt compatible with ren interface :hmmm:

I have the Studio, but according to the Avid site it probably isn't compatible with the Ren either:

Pro Tools Express FAQ
Q: What is Pro Tools Express?
A: Pro Tools Express is a new 16-track version of Pro Tools 10 software that now comes included with Mbox (3rd Gen) and Mbox Mini (3rd gen). It offers many of the same features as Pro Tools 10 in a more streamlined package, providing you with the essential tools to create music and audio, quickly and easily.

Q: How can I buy Pro Tools Express?
A: Pro Tools Express is only available bundled with Mbox (3rd Gen), Mbox Mini (3rd Gen), Fast Track Solo, and Fast Track Duo interfaces and is not available for sale separately.

Q: I just bought an interfcae that didn’t include Pro Tools Express—can I get it now?
A: Unfortunately, no. Pro Tools Express is only available bundled with specific interfaces purchased on or after March 21, 2012.

Q: Will Pro Tools Express work with other audio interfaces besides Mbox and Mbox Mini?
A: No. Pro Tools Express was designed to work exclusively with specific interfaces. The original release supported Mbox (3rd gen) and Mbox Mini (3rd gen), Support for Fast Track Solo and Fast Track Duo was added in April 2013. It does not work with other Avid interfaces, and cannot be used with third-party interfaces through Core Audio or ASIO.

I will tell you soon,
however, it wouldn't make sense if it would not be compatible.

I would write to Akai to ask what the heck you should do with your free bundled PT Express.

The crazy thing is that the other versions of Protools 10 support 3rd party interfaces. I'm sure PT Express shares a lot of the code base, yet it does not support 3rd party audio interfaces at all:

Yes, that must be a trial version of the full version of PT10. It does work with 3rd party interfaces. However the PT Express 10 does not.

Avid/Akai could easily add support for 3rd party interfaces or even code it so that if it detects the Ren or Studio it would be allowed to work.

I tried Protools Express and it works just fine with my Ren. Make sure you've registered and got your ilok info correct. P.S this is the PT Express that I got with the Ren.

Just got a reply back from Akai. They responded pretty quickly too:)

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Akai.

If you purchased the MPC Studio with the Pro Tools Express offer, you would have to plug in your MPC Studio to enable the software. I’ve included links to a new step-by-step Pro Tools Express installation and authorization video that has been published here. I’ve also embedded the video into the two following support articles to help further assist you with your installation and authorization process.

Yeah I'm curious about that too. I was a little tweaked over the prospect of getting PTE for free until I read it was only 16 tracks and 32bit only(1996 called to say hi). And if this is true and it does NOT work with the Ren interface? WOW.
