Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

One other question for my clarity.

So a group like let's say Portishead. They obviously run their drums through various hardware to tweak their drums sounds. Are you against a beatmaker sampling their drums then since its off their record and already tweaked/mastered?

And dont these original artists all have their drums mastered and tweaked by engineers ? Producers then take those previously mastered drums and tweak them. so you only oppose it if a fellow beatmaker takes clean hits off another beat-maker's record?

Wow

Are you now saying that you think creating your own drums and then using them is the same as chopping finished album tracks into 8s and replaying them?...you just broke the mold my man

Maybe i misunderstood and ylur talking about sampling a portishead record? I guess thats fair game but i wouldnt cos theres not much you can do to a portishead record unless yoir remixing it.

Look dude the point is we think its not cool to sample a sample and its quite ironic that someone called golden era thinks its ok to rip off the pioneers

The main factor is the history of hip hop is birthed form DJ'ing and taking all the funkiest stuff from other places and re-working it. At least as far as looping/sampling and interpolations, live played or digital.

So there isn't really a need to take from other hip hop or records that are already strongly sample based like Portishead for instance. If you want the same sound go get it yourself. The idea should be sample your own, even if it has been used, hopefully someone can do their own take on it.

When V.I.C. made this you think he grabbed the Portishead joint? Hell no, he grabbed his copy of "Danube Incident" and went in...

Again, that this exists/happened is not proof or open license to not sample from source and take from another sampled based producer. (Which as I've said is so obvious it's insane it's had to have been stated by myself and others at least a dozen times already)

Exactly Metatron and why I aint mad at Reggie. I know he was looking to cause drama with this thread for reasons "unknown" but he's doing his thing from a DJ perspective. My brother was a DJ and he'll mix some Aint No Half Steppin with a Michael Jackson acapella and kids would buy his tapes. Nowadays it aint two turntables and a mixer anymore, thanks to artists like Dilla, its two MPCs and a DAW so DJing has gotten complicated, remixes are called mashes now. That genre is called hiphop though. I'll keep doing Hip Hop no doubt!!!

Word. I'm peace with Reggie because more convo resulted in more clarity on my end how he walks the line between mixing/mash ups/remix sampling and original beat crafting.

He pointed out he also makes his original songs with his own sampled drums from old joints and is anything goes when he remixes. The way the vid was presented it was just confusing with the kit being the entry point to his blend/remix later in the video.

At that this point Golden Era is the only one with squabs, everybody else found clarity and talked out the grey area in what his post brought out.

Yeah it would have been cool if myself and others didn't need nine pages to state that one axiom that needs only the sentence you just typed.

Hope you enjoyed the show.

you aint sampling portishead drums and saying you made that...

hell the other day I heard a trap song that they sampled a portishead breakdown... guess what? the only memorable part of the track was the fact they sampled portishead... so to me, that is knows as a trap song with a portishead sample in it... it doesn't have any relevance beyond this thread where I mentioned I heard that happen.

anyways... **** go ahead and sample portishead.. right off their CD.. instead of snagging the OG break (which is known.. what they sampled aint a secret anymore) and be known for that song that sampled portishead.... yet again. (which has been done millions of times... even canibus had tracks with portishead cuts mixed in during transtions etc..) that shit stands out.

flips samples yourselves instead of relying on other already established producers to do the dirty work for you.
