No offense but obviously the extended warranty would be offered to cover the hardware end of The Ren or Studio beyond the manufacturer's warranty.

Also sometimes stores are more lenient about returning a broken unit if you paid up their extended fee at purchase. (read that as you dropped the joint and go in and "I don't know what happened", they prolly know you dropped it, but if you paid the extra warranty they might just play along and hand you a new one.)

I'm speaking generally here. Read the particulars of any paid warranty and look over the manufacturer's regular warranty to see what exactly extended will cover beyond that.

Better Mouse Trap wrote:I got it for my 5000 because of the standalone hard drive factor, why would I need it for the Ren when it's software based and not the same machine. I assume the software has support.

What's the worst the could happen if I don't get extra coverage?

The software support given, over time, will be up to the manufacturer. A lot of manufacturers have moved towards paid support when out of warranty.

The worst thing that could happen?...
- something dies in the controller circuitry and bricks it?
- they used cheapass tact switches, like in previous NuAkai MPCs, or maybe pad LEDs, and you have to pay to have someone replace them when they die?

i have the 3 year warranty on my ren and my max 49 from guitar center.. it covers all damage except theft.. when they said it covers spill, drops, etc.. i signed up quick fast! I leave nothing to drink near my equip and dropping it is very unlikely, but i figured i might as well be safe than sorry.

the worst that can happen if you don't get extra coverage is;
1. Miguel can do a running jump and leg drop on your mpc renaissance.
2. Rick Ross can crowd surf and land on your mpc renaissance.
3. Michael Jackson can rise from the dead and put his zombie hands with no glove on your mpc renaissance.

Software is almost never covered by warranty. Once a retailer sells it they usually wash their hands of any problems related to /caused by it.

i wouldn't throw out the idea of an extended warranty all together especially if you go with one of the refurbs or resealed units that are beginning to recirculate.

The tact switches of the MPC 1000, 2500, and 5000 are as robust as the ones found in the MPC 2000, 2000XL, 3000, and 4000. I suspect you will eventually have to replace tact switches on the Ren at some point.
