simple scsi cf storage?? any one??

Hi there..
I was looking for a basic storage solution for the mpc60..
I cleaned en repaired her and its running like a train also
fully tricked out with the marion scsi,3.10,and the extra memory,
But i am still running with the floppy's.
Because i want to take the mpc on the road, the solution needs to
be as basic as possible, most important : reliable.
Also no need for hot-swap.
But after searching here i realy lost track about what to get.
Witch brands? Some info is out off date.
Any help will be apreciated.

An internal CF reader is a great solution as you wont need any leads (SCSI, power) to connect the drive to the MPC. Of course you'll lose the floppy drive which may not be an issue if you don't see yourself needing it.

Best to buy an internal CF kit with all required parts included, non hotswap will be more affordable. Where to buy such a kit depends largely on where you live, and whether you want to install it yourself or ship your MPC out to have it done. A (cheaper) external CF kit can be purchased from a number of online sources, but prices vary wildly

So where are you based, and do you prefer a DIY kit, fancy sourcing the parts yourself, or want to have someone fit the CF for you? Or is an external drive not an issue?

Im based in the netherlands, so for purchasing the components the europe region must do the trick i guess?
The mpc is the centerpoint of my new setup(under construction) an extarnal would be the best option i guess. The mpc will be build in a flightcase without a removable front, if the reader is external i can build it where ever a spot is free. To still have easy acces to the card.
A diy kit would be fine, but the less components the better.(iam a bit of a diy geek tho) But reliable is a keyword in this one
As well as "plug in/startup/read it/play it..

You have two main options.

1. Native SCSI card reader

- Native SCSI card readers are not easy to find
- Not sure which exact models are compatible with the MPC60


2. IDE/ATAPI card reader with SCSI-IDE/ATAPI bridge

- use a SCSI-IDE/ATAPI bridge such as the Acard AEC-7720U, which might be available a forum member in his FS thread
- the card reader would need to be IDE/ATAPI, and compatible with MPC60 and whatever SCSI bridge you use, for hotswap, something possibly like Delock 91640 (not sure about MPC60 compatibility, would have to make sure before buying)
- Simple IDE-CF adapters/readers, for non-hot swap, connects the CF card directly to the IDE cable without any additional circuits to provide ATAPI protocol and therefore do not have hotswap capability
- A lot of simple IDE-CF adapters come without a 3.5 inch floppy drive sized chassis, which you might want for easy installation in place of the floppy drive.


(3. SATA card reader with SCSI-SATA bridge ... not fully tested)



Which ever solution you go with, you may need adapters to convert the internal floppy power cable to a different connector type, if required by the card reader, and possibly also split the single power into two separate cables, to feed both the card reader and the SCSI-IDE/ATAPI bridge.

You will also probably need to convert the SCSI cable from the MPC60 SCSI interface to suit the internal IDC50 connector on the card reader/SCSI bridge.

These MPC60/3000 card reader setups also require finding the correct CF cards to work with them, a lot of CF cards will not work, some of the slower SanDisk cards seem to be the go.

By now you probably realise that an 'off the shelf' external SCSI CF reader is a lot less hassle than a component build, and literally plug and play. I have two of these. One (shown below) is a SCSI for Samplers unit I found on eBay for around £70 the other is an Addonics unit which I scooped up with a cheap Akai DPS16 found in the small ads.



The external CF readers use pretty much the same components as an internal one, but in an external enclosure which requires a mains power supply. These external SCSI units suitable for Akai samplers do pop up on eBay if you keep an eye open.

As your in Europe your best bet is to first ask Jazzcat if he can help you out, he's a good mate of mine in the UK.
