Mpc Ren and quantize problem

Hello once again,

Except from the Ren i also own an mpc 2500se.
When i set the quantize to 16, put some swing on it and play lets say kick drums on a track, it is put where i played it.
When i do the same track with the same settings with the Ren, my kicks lets say, wont be at the spot i played them, some overlap or sound as one (if there are 2 kicks close to each other).

Any ideas why this is happening?
Should i put the quantize lets say to 32 to avoid that?

Just try to play 2 kicks close to each other with 16 quantize on and see how it sounds..
This didnt happen with the 2500 or the XL i had.

Yep quantize will move notes to the nearest quantize value automatically when turned on. In the case of the MPC-R you can layer multiple notes on top of each other and they will trigger at the same time. If you're playing multiple notes really close to each other other you'll want to set the T.C. to 1/32nd notes or turn quantize off completely otherwise it will just move the notes on top of each other and you'll run into the problem you are currently experiencing.

What software version are you using? Install 1.3.1 if you haven't done so already.

I am not seeing the issue you are having. If I have 1/16 quantize turned on, and time I strike a pad it will be moved to the closest 1/16 note. If I strike a pad twice close together, the recorded notes will be moved to the closest 1/16 note. If it happens to be the same location, only one note will be recorded. In other words, Pad A01 can only be recorded at 001:01:000 once on a given track. Attempting record the same note at the same time position will overwrite it.

Try this...

1. Assign a drum kit to Track 1
2. Set Tempo to 30
3. Press Rec + Play Start
4. Strike Pad A01 multiple times and observe where the note falls in the sequencer grid.

It is possible to trigger two notes at the same time on the same note and position. Maybe it's not supposed to act this way but I've done it on purpose where I have a longer note going over a bunch of shorter notes on the same key.

You are right though that normally when you play a note at the same position while recording it over writes the old one. There may be a bug happening here where the note is being shifted on top of the other one without deleting the old one. (since i know it is possible from experience to play two notes at once on the same key)

So the solution is to turn it 32.
One last question, If i put quantize to 32 will it mess up all other tracks that were recorded with 16?
I mean, when i choose a quantize value, is this globaly for all tracks?

That is not the solution. The Ren 1.3.1 quantizes like all the MPCs before it. If you are having issues, it may be your buffer settings.

Changing quantize settings will not impact previously recorded notes unless you apply quantize to the entire track.
