do i need a mixer to sample vinyl into the mpc 1000 or can i go straight turntable to mpc

Depending on the type of turntable you have. Generally, I would say yes, you do need one. If your turntable has a pre-amp, then no, you don't need a mixer. If you have a technic 1200, 1210, etc. then yes you do. I wouldn't go all out and buy an expensive mixer just for the turntable, just something simple.
