I feel ya man. All record shops are extinct on this island. Only antiques shops and the annual record convention is how I dig, also through online shops.

I'm lucky with garbage diggin' though, I be finding stacks in public and private trash cans and I haven't checked them in over 9 years, so I dig through that.

Was there in `05, nice place. Stayed a little south on the island, in Caribe Playa beach resort. Celebrated new years eve in/around Ponce. can`t really remember, to much drinks/other things, ha ha. Went to San Juan, party and casino`s. I remember going in the old town, finding some record stores. But mostly antiques

Anyway, I always find something to keep me going. Been a few times I was thinking of just buying piles of records from people who sell them cheap, but I already did that, and I`m not really getting rid of the crap either. Not that I try either.

Yup, I'm up in Carolina aka Cacolandia (We call it that because all of the spanish rappers and producers come from here, rappers are called cacos). I came only to visit family and winded up staying. There were record stores when I first came, but little by little they closed out, used to buy the mixtapes from NY from those stores. Once in a while DJs from the states come down and I try to hook up with them because they keep stashes at their grandmother's house and I buy off them too.

Right now, my only spot is this antique store and the old man always gives me 50% off type deals, but his son is an **** and charges me full price. That stack of santeria records I bought was all $20 bucks from the old dude but the week before when the son was running it, he wanted $86 dollars, so I said to hold them for me until I get the money. I waited until the old man returned and copped them. Son is one of these metrosexuals suns of bitches.

I don't dig.

It's fun and relaxing, sometimes very frustrating, especially when you spend hours trying to find a certain LP and come up short. see alot of dope album art too, which is always a bonus

Can't really compete with hipsters who've got way more money then I've got.

But ever since I started getting into making beats more I realized that you usually dont need or want to sample those expensive rare groove records anyway.

Everybody already sampled them.

I find myself more impressed these days when someone takes something obvious and easily available,
maybe a standard issue Barry White record,
but does something unusual and creative with it.

or take some shitty music and make gold out of it. I mean, there are so many records with musically shit on it but they still have some sonically good stuff on it like an organ chord or some good sounding drums or bass here and there.

See, there are many reasons people do this. Some are logical others are not for the average John Doe.
I could try to explain the feelings but you won't understand. But you might understand other reasons because you might have have similar things.

What about collecting things? Do you collect something? DVDs, CDs, Photos, Books, Stamps, Stones, Insects......
If you do you should understand the collecting from this point of view.

People have hobbies and like this or that and pay money for it. I like music (subgroup:vinyl). Others like cars (subgroups might be : racing cars, oldtimers, cartuning etc) some are more into sport.
If you have hobbies you should get a bit of understanding why people dig vinyl. In most cases hobbies are not very logical except the fact that the person loves it and feel pleasure about it (this seem to be logic only for the person tho)

How many files do you have on your computer? Do you need all these files? Do you use every single file?

The reasons I dig, collect vinyls

* I like music. I have preferences but I like music in general cause My ears and brain tell me that music is language, emotion. It makes me feel good, sad, funny, horney, angry. Isn't that crazy? I kind of control my emotion with the selection of the music I listen to.

* I like the "work" that listening to vinyl include. The fact you have to stand up, go to the shelf, search for the record, pull it out, go to the turntable, lay the record on the platter, press start, put the needle to the record. And yes, sometimes I also hate that fact but most of the time it feels good.

* I like the mechanical facts of the vinyl. I still find the technology admirable. Its kind of rude but then so dainty Compared to other media it lasts long, the playback technology can be build by yourself with common parts (it soesn't even rely on electricity). Under average temperature (the temperature humans also need to life) it lasts very long (compare it with paper/books instead of CD, USBsticks, DVD). A scratch might sound bad (for some folks) but it won't stop you from being able to listen to the medium. A scratch on a CD can really destroy the medium so no Player is able to play it. Guess what happens to an audio file if you "put a scratch" (damaged data) on it.

* I like the feeling I get when I found something on a record. It might be a nice sample or a nice song or a cover version of a song I already know but from a totally unknown artist. Finding samples (used or unused doesn't matter). It feel good to have samples other people doesn't have. It feels good to hear a sample someone other used (especially non hiphop artists). I just found a sample Depeche Mode used in "Blasphemous Rumours". I always thought that they played it with a synth but its a sample. This is more than just llistening to music. Its diggin INTO the music.

* I like the feeling I get when I buy a record for 50 cent, search it in discogs, popsike and ebay and realize that people are willing to pay 50 EUR for that record (I still don't sell it. It just feels good having a value and paid next to nothing for it)

* I like flea markets and thriftshops in general. Not just for diggin vinyl.

I don't care what other do. Do your thing and be happy. I like viynl. You probably don't like it. It's ok. I'm not telling you what to do or "whats real". I could live with the whole world that don't like records (bring all the rcords to MY house )

Nah, I wish I could but unfortunately I don't have the space or money which sucks sometimes cause I get that feeling like I know theres some perfect song or band out there that would blow my mind but I'll never hear it because no ones bothered to put it on itunes or youtube.

I've got a garage full of records,
and spent my youth riding BMX bikes in-between the dollar bin and my turntables.

Now I'm done.

I've got almost everything I need.

In fact I might have to set half of them on fire now,
since everything has been rereleased these days.

I went through a lot of trouble for a few things,
now they've been remastered and are widely available.

Digging, in the historical sense,
is somewhat over.

I'll put it this way,
its mostly corporate conglomerates digging these days.

Through the dusty backlogs of musicians they've ripped off.

Including the Beatles.
