Fair enough but it closes the door to having tons of incredible software at your disposal. It's not like a 100 other things on Windows and OS X aren't problematic at times. So I'm not going to never use/buy 100's of top shelf things over losing a USB port or needing to fix a driver now and then.
With iLok I don't mind it so long as the drivers are working, and if every 18 months I have to re-install one it's no big deal.
I'll take an iLok over Native Instrument monitoring my computer when its on the web. If you accidentally turn on both your allowed computers for NI stuff they can remotely corrupt one of the installs, they did it to me one afternoon. If I recall the NI app was only running on one the boxes I didn't run the app twice in tandem. I was web surfing on the other computer.
Had to re-install the whole app after that, which is just silly.
iLok I can just put the app on all my computer, 100 terminals if I had that many.
And On clean OS installs It's saves me hours and days of challenge/response/writing on emails from foreign countries/asking for counter resets and waiting again.
Xils lab's last couple releases have been serial only after prior ones where iLok. I won't say I don't welcome that, and I think Xavier over there is off the mind set that if it goes on 3-4 boxes they will be my 3-4 computers. (have to check if he imposes a limit, I have the newer plugs on 2 Windows ones and one Mac).
But I do agree Nym that the preference would be some honor on our part and a reasonably less intrusive method to have our software unlocked/licensed. But I personally accept that a lot of companies are not going to want to trust everybody and hope for the best.
