whatever u have u can make it osund good, changing your setup might not do s**t for you. it's just depends on your ear for music and beats not just equipment.

sp-808 is craappolla all the way. The dumbest sampler ever made. Subjective opinion mind you...
The only good thing about this mishab is its sound, very rolandish and rich and maybe some FX when used as FX unit.
The only old school thing about is its cheesy retarted light show it does when powered on and limited irritating features.
stay away guys, whatever the price.
anyways.. why would you consider getting one if you know that there is the grey padded beast out there...

use old restricted gear- yeah cos that will set you apart from the rest of these samey sounding guys....

using the mc 303.. aint old school. its chock full of the chees'ist preset sounds i have ever heard. the sp808 would be alright if it played samples from ram and not streamed from zip's. all in all its far from old school. maybe pre-school was what you meant.

the mpc is a canvas, we all use different colours of paint.

If you want to go old school, how about E-Mu's SP 12 and SP 1200. I actually had the sp1200 when they came out back in '87. Used that along with a 4 track a mic and yes, i even had one of those casio joints. you couldn't tell me and my boys sh@&!. We would do what we could on that then take it to a studio and try to lay things down. didn't do the studio thing too much cause we didn't have paper like that.

But I would take the sp1200 today if I had one.

I am not sure how one could call that old school compared the MPC series since both of these are newer than the MPC series.

Roland drum machines are good starting point!
My 1st was a Tr 606 then came a 707,808 ,909 ,626,505 and many more.
Dr. Rythm was good also.
