Apparently I need to connect my laptop to the ren via some midi-cable to even get software like Massive to work? For I was unable to get ONE sound to record using the USB connection
Connecting the Renn via USB to your laptop is correct.
Needing to connect the Renn via midi cable to work with Massive is impractical. So let's just say it is incorrect.
USB, we can say, is a more intelligent way to send a midi signal. MIDI is just a fancy word for 'queue' or 'signal' or 'giving the go'. All in all, if you want anything to communicate with your laptop (or computer), EVERYTHING must be connected via USB. USB is a highway, MIDI is traffic. The only way MIDI will travel into your computer is via the highway (USB connection).
For this reason, the market sells "MIDI to USB" converters. This is for musicians who own keyboards that DO NOT have USB output, but have a MIDI output. They can no use the keyboard's keys to play whatever sounds that the computer is generating.
If you use MASSIVE as a standalone program (which means you aren't uploading it under a production software) then as long as the RENN is connected to the computer via USB, turned on, you can goto AUDIO/MIDI preferences and set it as MIDI in.
Almost anything connected through USB, with buttons, can be used to trigger (MIDI) sounds.
