As a hip hop producer I love MPCs for the tight timing to play what I want when I hit those pads. It`s about the feel, groove, one can get playing realtime drums. I check the MV-8000 and yeah if you want a more computerlike sequencer, timestretching, recording to CD and visual arranging like Cubuse or Reason, the MV might be the choice for you. But if you really want to play live into your workstation by feel turning off the quanization the MPC is the way to go. 960ppq vs 480ppq means if plays what you put in. Both are deep machines, but the 4k has a litttle surprise next month so just wait til after Christmas. Play with the gear and just do you. :D

Main thing is to use your ear to make music. My subjective opinion is that the MV is Visual and the MPC is Aural depends how you want to work.

I got a MV
I looked at the 4k cuz, I was born SP and naturally transitioned into MPC
still when it came down to it I liked the MV I think linear seqing is better personally. and I can make changes on the fly plus the MV also has pad muting, AND don't ISHT on the filters they aint bad, I haven't played with the 4's yet, but they beat the hell out of the 3 and the 2.
apples and oranges
still, I know the 4k has a tube pre-amp,( ENVY )
and I think it looks better,
but I saw the price diff, I think that's cuz of the tubes, and I could only go with the MV, Plus they offer mad file import options I can read akai files old roland files and straight wavs, the mastering suite is sufficient for beat CDs and great if you just want ta get ya name on the street
AND people seem to think the MV only has eight tracks
?
there are eight dedicated tracks , and I think 136 midi tracks that playback the internal patches and any samples that you assign to a patch.
If you haven't already purchased one yu can go to MV-NATION for the other side of this discussion.
STILL no matter what you use, the idea is to make another BANGER

I've read the MV manual a few times and can't see how this can be done. This is
one of the reasons that I purchased the MPC series..

Song names are fake!

Let's say your at the gig rocking your remix of Stair Ways to Heaven and you
were planning on playing your remix of Brothers are Going to Work it out, but decided
off of the crowd respose that you'd rather go with your remix of Strings of LIfe.

How do you make that change on the fly. I don't see any way to switch up the song order
that you want. AM I wrong? That's the kind of changes on the fly that I need for my live
performances...

all about feel and sound for me as thats really what makes your music, and its what people will judge your talent by

with that in mind the MPC4k is my companion, as it gets what I want and gets it fast, without boggin myself down, saves time for me to do other shit like.... get fat

ok

hmmm...
well I don't know the structure of the $k but if yu got it I guess yu like it...
but, in the MV yu can do a few things to accomplsh this task.
First off I wouldn't use it live in a gig, it isn't that kinda tool,
yes, you can drive a nail with a screwdriver but a hammer is better, feel me?
anyway, in each project (a project is what you load from the hard disk before you work) there are songs that you sequence and or record, you can select any of these songs within like a second and a half, with 4 button pushes. If you want to play a song from a different project, well that requires LOADING that project and that just shows poor planning.
as I said it's an all inclusive compositional tool, not a gig tool, you can do a show with it, but it's features are optimized for studio work not stage work.
STILL, you seem to have made your choice so I hope things work the way you want them to, I know my shit sounds tight...

I totally agree with you about the using a screwdriver to drive a nail in. That is
EXACTLY why I got the MPC 4000. As the MV8000 is pretty much completely
useless for a live situation, at least for making changes on the fly. And on top
of it, I have a EXCELLENT machine for Studio work as well. Myself, I dont' like
to just limit myself to sitting in the studio. I like to be on stage and making people
dance. And I personally, don't want a machine, where I'll just hit "Play" and then might
as well grab a stool. I like to physically play it, not only the actual Sounds, but the
sequences as well.

And as for your steps for "changing on the fly", the most IMPORTANT thing for that
is that it does NOT require one to STOP the sequencer when changing songs.

Now whether you call improvising poor planning or not, is up to you, but you'll want to take
THAT up wtih not only me but MANY other musicians (jazz musicians come to mind).
I like the ability to remix the song on the spot, or change to a different song. I know
my crowd does. I guess, I should contact Merrian Webster and have them change
the definition of "spontaneous" to "poor planning"?

I personally call it poor planning to put oneself in a sitauation where one CAN"T change things if wanted. Maybe because I come from a DJ background as well as musical
background, I like to read the crowd while playing. If I see them going off on more
tribally stuff, then I 'm going to pick that kind of stuff to keep people dancing and enjoying their night.

Dave

alright man, go make a beat.

By aprim Tue Dec 14, 2004 1:30 pm
Hey fellas

I had a 4k from the jump, bought it in 2001. I always loved how quick it was to make a beat. Plus the midi control on the 4k is tight. with program changes and 4 midi outs if you have tons of gear this is the machine by far.
But since then I have bought a MV and sold my 4k.
Thought the MV was right for the system because the VGA and mouse seemed real cool. Please Liner Seq was king of cool coming from Cubase so I was down for the change.
Worst move ever. Although the VGA was cool and the sequencing wasn’t that bad, it still was a pain in the a$$ to get around for me.
Program changes had to be added into the track to you could select banks and patches from other gear.
2 Midi out was crippling for me. I have plenty of other gear that wasn’t to play too.
Try to work around it but he was on eBay in a month.
I figure with the VGA mouse I would get more of a computer and cubase.
And I did
Now on a hunt for a 4k, or 3kSE
The MV is great for some people BUT TRY IT FOR A MONTH BEFORE YOU SELL THE 4K.
LESSON LEARNED.

Do you think you can give us a legitimate comparison soon. I think it would be great to hear you take on which is better especially since you own both of them at the same time. Let's say you try to make the same beat on both machines and let us know which is easier to use. If you put that into a seperate thread please PM me the thread

Thanks in advance
