I agree with him when he said the magic comes from the user and it happens because of the work flow on the MPC. Technology not getting in the way of composing. Getting out musical ideas as soon as they're thought up. That's the magic of the MPC.

I just finished reading this article and was quite shocked. All these years, I thought the swing function moved all 16th notes, but it appears to only move every OTHER 16th. Am I understanding that correctly?

no and yes. its not a thing of 16th but odd and even. Notes on an even position gets shifted. the 2nd 16th, the 4th 16th and so on but also the 2nd 8th and the 4th 8th if your quantize is set to 8th and you use swing on that.

Yes, the easiest way to think of it is this. To create swing, you need a note swing into, so one not stays stationary, and the second note is delayed making it swing into the stationary one. The note needs something to swing against. Otherwise it would just sound like someone recording with really bad latency.

I dont think it was chopping by ear as much,
I still do that even with a visual,
but that sampling live music was inherently off beat.

That was not easily done before you had the memory for a loop.

I've never used a swing function because sample loops have always carried the swing for me.
