I had to post here, even though I'm bringing this back from the dead.
I've gone back to an all hardware setup to (at LEAST) start all my tracks! I have quite a few of the "usual suspects" that get named around here, but I'd have to say once I bought my MPC 2000(classic) I've gravitated to just a few specifics. Not sure if it counts as one, but I've got my 3 Slim Phattys set up in a poly-chain...I TREAT them as a single synth, sometimes using one oscillator for a mono bass, sometimes all 6 as a huge unison bass/lead....same goes with chords, sometimes its a 3-voice, 1-osc polysynths.... The second is my S1000kb.... Best pitch interpolation I've heard in hardware. Third, of course the MPC!
I own a few more great pieces, and in truth, I use FOUR to start every track... Access Virus C desktop. Sold my Snow and B and bought the C. Top 3 best hardware SYNTH easy.
Good thread. The thing many of us (or at least, I) forget ALL THE TIME is that great gear with pleasing sonic traits simply makes the sonic portion of our job easier, but many of the traits we love in our gear are attainable provided the rest of the prices are there... A great example is sampling hot in an ASR-10 for color....running the drum stem at +24dBu into an SSL or Amek will give you that same crunch, but with a bit more control since its a dynamic process. Of course, many of us not only don't OWN an SSL, but havent(and won't)get the chance to work on one.... So one of the next best solutions is to grab 3 treasured pieces of outboard and work them like Debbie in Dallas
Great thread.
Anyone game to take a sample set and have us all make a beat with "our 3"?!!? That would be instructive AND fun as hell!
