The mixer in this product is nonsense if you need to use more than one sequence. This product needs a universal mixer, but I very much doubt it will ever see it because only a few people seem to want to use more than one sequence and be able to mix their tunes in a normal linear way. Having to reproduce paramter changes manually for every single plugin for every track in every sequence is beyond amateur. The design couldn't possibly have been any worse. Well, actually there is no design. Its a copy of the midi mixer from the 25 year old MPC 60. That is basically what the Ren has and of course is not suitable for a product which can host multiple VSTs across multiple tracks and seqeucnes.

What I cant get my head around is no one at Akai spoke up about this

I wrote about it here:

But I'm sure not only me, I think the while MPC Studio and Renaissance customers wants the possibility to use effects global on the complete channel for the whole song. I can't believe that I have to copy the sequence including the effects sequence by sequence for the whole song. Incredible :-/

Of course thats what people want to do. There isnt a daw, HD recorder, analog or digital mixer out there ever built which forces the user to work in such a hugely convoluted manner. Dont expect much support around here for it. I dont know why that is, but the lack of interest/need for a universal mixer is astounding!. If this were a product used by much more dance 4/4 based EDM musicians then it would be at the very top of the agenda. There would be an uproar and nAkai would have to fix it.

I'm a 4 on the floor dance music producer and I fought with this for the first 3 or 4 months that I had it.

It is pretty ridiculous, although there could be some advantages to this way (live performance etc...) though the disadvantages out weigh the advantages IMO.

You have some options, though they may not be what you hope for.

1) Create your entire track in one big sequence. Move around and looping sections while you work on them. This turns it into a standard DAW style way of working where you have 4 inserts per track so each sound can have it's own track and you don't to worry about FX changes in different sequences.

Here is a solution I came up with to help you navigate around a large sequence easier.

2) Route your submixes and/or individual sounds to another DAW so that you can have "bus" channels for all of your sounds. This way you can apply FX on each sound and then route them to a bus for "group FX". With this method you can also use the duplicate sequence functions.

In my opinion much of this could be solved if they were to add the ability to have Inserts on Submixes and give us 16 of them.

I think the track mixer can still be useful for performing and I don't see them completely overhauling the mixer any time soon (at least not until 2.0 if even then).

So a middle ground solution would be inserts on Submixes (and 16 submixes at least)
and inserts on return channels too while we're at it.

Yeah , since they are automatically routed to Submix 1 and not the Instrument Track.

Nevertheless you cant control the level of any Submix Channel from the Hardware.

...

However the Pad inserts seams to be useful when quickly trying out Effects on one Pad and finally resample it, before removing all inserted effects and restoring the initial routing to the Track Mixer.

Your working around the shortcomings of the Ren and if your happy to do so thats cool. Often workarounds can add creativity to the process, but imo, not in this case - it just adds awkwardness and more work which I think is less creative.

From the launch of the Ren there should have been a switch-able mode from the current 'mixer follows sequences' to 'universal mixer' that doesn't follow sequences.
Having both modes would be great because you rightly point out the current method would be very useful for live work.

However, all said and done the chances of a universal mixer ever being implemented in to the Ren I think are extremely low. Due to that my Ren sits there doing little because I end up just using it as a 4 bar loop machine simply becasue I cant really progress songs further in the mixing and multiple sequence stage without a whole lot of mind melting...

Yeah, this killed me too at first. Couldn't figure out why all the effects were different between sequences. Definitely a KEY feature that needs to be addressed. I've just been copying sequences and deleting tracks and re-recording different patterns to make it work like how I used to

Wow, I never looked for mixer in song mode! That would really help allot. I've been bitching about this mixer thing since 1.0! I've been building my tracks up as far as I need them then after coping seq.'s I would subtract or mute tracks in these copied seq's to have differant drops and change ups.

Sometimes ish is right in front of your face...

Thanks again hellfire!

ok so i went into a track i had finished and orginized in song mode. there is no mixer for song. its the same set up. you would still need to bounce to every seq's mixer individually and place your plug ins and bounce back and forth threw each seq. mixer and tweak each and every one the same.
am i missing what your saying cause its the same shitty mixer set up as b4

@Pk1... i think you need to convert your Song to 1 Sequence, then not in Song mode but in normal edit window choose that LONG sequence and mix it...?!?! I assume...havent tried it yet tho.

I didn't read through this thread as the topic has been discussed numerous times. But if it hasn't been suggested already.....

Stick to using the Program Mixers while creating multiple sequences. DO NOT use the Track Mixer initially. After you have your sequences finished, link the sequences in Song Mode and then export into a single sequence. At that time, use the Track Mixer.

OR

Skip using Song Mode altogether, and compose using a single linear sequence. This will eliminate issues when it comes to mixing.
