Hi im a newbie to this room much love & peace !
ive been using my mpc 2000xl for a few months & understand how to use the basic functions, the problem im having & have been asking is MELODY how do you create or find the right melody from vinyl.

I sample from old records, i can sample a kick & snare, hi hat etc, & have them on diffent pads & rearange the pitch etc but when it comes to the melody i get stuck.

Dont get me wrong i can find a loop etc but the same loop playing thru out my beat becomes repetative & needs some change ! if u got any ideas or feed back plz help me out.

PEACE

16 levels is good to bang out your own melody
or
you can take it further ie. AUTO CHROMATIC

Have you tried to sample a single hit?

ie. Single string chord hit
Do the Auto Chromatic thing with it (pg 117 xl manual).
Bang out your own melody.
Afterwards you can still edit each pad in PARAMS and
tune and tweak even further.

I do it all the time.

Thx alot lampdog & much respect for that, it has opened a new chapter in my production i never even knew that button existed lol
the only problem i had was, i loaded my zip disk which had a beat programmed on it & a few samples, & when i tried the auto chromatic technique it wiped all the beat & samples off ! is there a way u can load ur saved sounds & still auto cromatic stuff with out loosing any saved production ?
i spent alot of time on those samples, movie clips etc i got a back up so not to worry it was just a test & much appreciated peace.

It's not lost if you loaded it again and THEN did the auto chrom function.

The auto chrom function automatically places the new tuned sound in drum 1 - where from the sound of your situation you had ALL your sounds.

Your sounds will still be IN your MPC jsut not where they where originally.

Try pg 113 xl manual, selecting programs.
Highlight "newpgm a" and roll the wheel to whatever pgm you want.
Press the pads while you do this to HEAR what you are doing.

Your XL can access 4 of those at a time. The autochrom function only takes up 1, your drums will be found on one of the other ones in there when you roll that wheel. have fun. 256 samples total live access, more samples AND programs can be stored in mpc2kxl but that's another story.

I use the autochrom function alot but I always save one pgm for that specifically.

thx im gonna give that a try see what comes out of it ! i mean it should be practical i guess it's just playing around with it & learning from mistakes etc.

Also is there a formula with the zoneing technique u got 1-16 options i know it chops up the sample but whats the purpose & can it help with creating melodies in any way?

use loops. sample an ill loop of vinyl then cut it into segements using the mpcs zoning feature, then replay the loop in the mpc. Then lay drums on it or whatever.

oh that isnt options. the zoning feature is slices. How many slices ur makin. Lik say u want 12 slices u would use that. read the newbie bible for info on this

Also try chopping up the melodie (once you get the hang of zoning) and playing some variations.
+ melodies will sound less boring if they're longer, so try bangin out an 8 or 16 bar melodie for a change.

have done thx  .
Also i been sampling a few vinyl records & i got a few orchestra records but they are so difficult to pull samples from is it just me or are corchestra tracks tough to pull samples from i mean, what would be the best part to sample, or what vinyls would yall recommend sampling from ?

What parts are the main focus the begining, middle or end ! Kanye west broke down in the scratch issue n.o 2 i think, that he listens only to the 1st few seconds & goes straight to the middle part & thats it, if u cant catch it in the 1st few seconds thats it, i no that every one has their own technique in production but what im sayin is, is their a formula or pattern in finding that perfect sample becaus i got hundreds of vinyls i got from my bro & im finding it kind of hard to get these samples out, if u can shed any light on this plz ?

"listens only to the 1st few seconds & goes straight to the middle part & thats it"
That's funny cause I have doing that for years now also. I don't wanna sit there through the whole thing.

There's formula or pattern cause each producer will have his own vision of what he is looking for. Me, myself I listen for ANY single strokes or chord hits. I listen for ambience, sometimes I will listen for riffs and/or mood changers I call them (when the normal breaks down and becomes a softer or more agressive rhythm). I'll chop a single hit right before the next instrument/hit starts. I'll do some timestretchin on it if I need it. Add some reverb if needed to lengthen the tail end of it slightly, autochrom it, maybe add a very slight echo/chorus to it, come up with my melody and use it.

thx for the break down. :)
