No, not at all. It's as easy and straightforward as you'd hope it to be. Certainly no slower than JJOS. You just get the option to nudge notes around in finer increments.

Anything you cut can be saved to the Phrase Library, so you can have multiple phrases to paste where you want.

Good news :) I don't know anyone who owns a 4K and could show me directly. I'll check on the internet if I can find a video of grid editing.

Look at how many variations JJ has given us and I still say it feels forced.
Felt that way a couple of years ago and I still feel that on both the 2500 or 1k the shoehorn is ever present.

The 4k just feels smoother to navigate and interact with.

Interesting, I don't feel this way at all. I have a 4K and I've been using my JJOS 2500 exclusively lately.

The screens always feel cluttered or somewhat displaced and no other MP has that common jog/cursor layout like the 4k.
Then there's the use pads for buttons that I hate on all the Numark MPs.

Is the 4K screen the same as the akai DPS16? I own a DPS16 and I don't really like the screen. I m not a fan of white screens. Anyway just a matter of taste.

For those who want absolutely a dedicated button for a particular mode in OS-XL (2k5) they can customize their numeric buttons like this :

In the case of the numeric buttons

The mode can be assigned to 0-9 of a numeric button.

Please press F5 (Num.Key) button in OTHER mode.
Image

Please select "MODE CHANGE".

Image
When "MODE CHANGE" is select, the mode can be assigned to a numeric button.

How to assign the mode
Please press the pad (mode) assigned while pressing the number button which assigns the mode.

For example, if PAD5 (RECORD) is pressed, pressing 5 of a numeric button, RECORD mode is assigned to the button of 5,
and RECORD mode will be displayed if 5 of a numeric button is pressed.

By the way I have another question to ask to 4K users :)

Do you like or do you often use the GO TO function and the punch IN/OUT edit points function?

Thx

I've not seen any videos on grid editing, but professor quack's videos are worth a watch for other aspects of the machine.

i gotta say this thread has been a real eye opener. the 4000 has never been on my radar at all since i was focused on using my 1000. but reading this thread and doing a little research on the 4000 has made it clear to me that the 4000 essentially is what JJ has been trying so hard to make his OS be for the past 5 years!

i can see now that pretty much every feature and interface addition that JJ has put into his OS has come straight from from the 4000! but still you get so much more with the 4k. you've got the higher sequencer resolution, the ability to sample at higher bitrates, more polyphony, way more & way better FX, the modulation matrix, more q-link control, external MIDI control of almost all the parameters(!!), the large screen... it's even got a software editor!

i've spent the last weekend having my mind blown while researching all the things that the 4k can do. it's an absolute beast of a machine and you can pick one up for pretty cheap these days. i honestly would have probably bought one already if it wasn't for one serious drawback... this thing is HUGE!

20.71" x 6.69" x 17.83" & 23lbs! damn! the thing is just too big. it would be a real pain to lug that around to gigs. if akai could figure out a way to get those exact same specs into a more compact package i would buy one in a second.

The problem is just that my computer is too weak so I can't pretend to be one

And it's probably not finished for OS128XL  OS3 users have to use a limited version unfortunately :(

Getting inspired by the 4K, JJ gave us more and more advanced features and it's really tempting to go buy the "original". Still afraid to see my personal workflow getting slower though, accustomed to JJ OS for so many years now.

It's worth making a space on your desk for. It's not a gigging machine at all though IMO.

I bought XL very early on (probably within the first month of release), and it sticks in my mind how you held back because of how the q-links were gimped in XL. None of those issues apply to the 4K. I lost count half way but I think there's around 60 direct assignments you can make to them at the part and global level, with a smaller set of controls for the individual pads.

It's very easy to assign a bunch of q-links and other midi controllers and jam away till your heart's content. The sound engine also allows you to push the sound to further extremes and still sound good, whereas the Nukai machines break up and sound bad very quickly if you start messing with the tuning. You can simulate a very slow turntable start/stop on the 4K and it sounds convincing. It's not always apparent what the best tuning is to work at though because there's a wide range that sounds useable. That's a luxury after using a 2500 with JJOS.

I guarantee your workflow will slow down initially until you become accustomed to the machine and develop the muscle memory. Some aspects will be equally as fast while others take an extra button press or two. Some things will be missing while other things you would never have imagined were possible with an MPC.

Either way, you can't lose at this point.

yeah, i'm definitely gonna keep the 4k in mind. it is without a doubt the finest MPC ever made. the q-link & modulation capabilities of the thing are just insane.

...but i just got an Elektron Octatrack a couple months ago, and that is my main focus these days. my poor MPC 1000 has been exiled to the kitchen table for the time being. i'll never get rid of it, tho.

Yeah that's the exciting part :)

I got the samplekings video tutorial. I think it was made on an earlier version of the OS so not the freshest information but what I really like in the video was filters, the program modulation window, layout of the ZONE tab, Q links setup and sequence (approximately same content as the youtube video above)

On the other hand I know I will hate the TRIM screen  I don't like how the waveform is shown (reminds me my CD3000XL to a certain extent) and the SHIFT + cursor for smaller increments reminds me some nightmares on AKAI OS.

Unfortunately, GRID EDIT and many other things were not shown in the video. I guess I should buy the sound for samplers DVD but this one is not cheap.

I want to put my hands on a 4K to try by myself now. I will put it on my wishlist and wait for a good deal.

you can make it so it shows the waveform in trim mode like it does in the jjos. ask coz or someone else on here how to do it, its something pretty simple though from what i can remember. its probably in the manual too.

The Octatrack is a beast! I'd love to check out some of their gear but I'm not sure if I'd get down with the step sequencing workflow. I'd definitely get this combo if I could though. :smoker:

Trim in the 4K isn't as refined as in JJOS. There's several things that aren't as good in comparison, like selecting sounds from the pads in JJOS and that sound becoming active. You either have to scroll through your samples with the field at the top with the 4K, which is a little bit sluggish, or you have to bounce out of trim and into one of the program screens where hitting a pad selects the sound. The alternative is to select your sample from the sample list, which is decent enough because of the big screen.

Once in the trim screen everything is perfectly functional but quite different to other MPCs. The dual waveforms and shift button functions take some getting used to, but they work well once you're up to speed.

The waveform display is also customisable.
