can anyone help

i have a mpc 1000, my boy has a mpc 2000xl. how come he can swich the sounds from his mpc and i cant. he can save them too.

what i mean is he can go from 1-128 on a program field on his mpc 2000xl and the mpc will remember those numbers, alowwing him to go back and fourth fromsequence to sequence (his mpc recalls the programs when he swiches)

wereas with my set up i have to swith my sounds on the rack and program each sequence there. (i have a motif rack) so this leaves me to have to call up and swich the programs on the motif everytime i want to work on another sequence.

BTW- i am not talking about controlling the tracks (1-16) im talking about the programs (1-128)

any help would be appreciated.

I have not used the 1000, but I have had a 3000 and a 60 for the last 10 years, and I'm sure it'll be the same.

You need to insert a MIDI program change into your sequence. this will tell the MPC, on an internal drum sequence track, to switch MIDI programs (in other words, it's own internal kits). This will also work for changing external gear programs (synths, fx etc...).

To do this, you can go into step edit on a drum track, insert a MIDI program change controller (representing the # of the program you are changing to) and exit. Make sure to insert a program change at the begining of your song/sequence to tell it it's initial program # setting.

Again, the symantics of the 1000 may differ, but this is general MIDI controller data, so you'll be able to do it.

thanx jon that worked. now when i have my sounds picked out i can program them on the mpc... this keeps me from having to do it on the motif wich is a pain in the butt.

but i still wonder if there is a way i can do it in real time (like the mpc2000xl) see the changes dont happen until after i play the sequence. so i still have reach over and fiddle aruond with my motif till i find what i am looking for. it is so much easier with the 2000xl because as you turn the dial the sounds change right there. none the less what i have learned here has made my life a lot easier..

it should work in real time, without having to play the sequence. If you have a MIDI track selected on the MPC, make sure the MIDI out port and channels are right (MIDI out port A, channel 1 on the MPC to MIDI in, channel 1 on the motif for example) and change the # in the PGM field of the MPC track. that should automatically change the program number on the motif, without the sequence playing.

If it does not, there may be a MIDI parameter setting that needs to be adjusted. Look in the MIDI screen on the MPC for something that talks about sending program changes. The specifics between the 3000 and 2000 will be a problem here, so I can't tell you exactly what it will say, but it will talk about sending (or blocking or passing or filtering) MIDI program changes. If it is blocked, enable it and it should work.
