Id go for either a 60, a 60II, a 3000, a 2000, a 2000xl, a 4000, a 5000, or a 500/1000/2500. yeah one of those should fit the workflow you've described to us..

seriously.. do you need USB? Multiple MIDI outs? Functions only available with JJos? battery powered? are you going to be using samples from your computer, or sampling your own shit? No samples at all? WE GOTTA KNOW IN ORDER TO HELP YOU. MPC's were never made for sepcific music styles.

they are all pretty similar. you just need to look at features of each and decide which one fits what you need. if you got $$ to blow and can't decide get a 4000. If you want to get to know an MPC on a budget, try out a 500 - you can always upgrade.

Any.

Making Reggae/Dub/Dancehall/Vibes is contingent on the choice of sounds more than anything.

Really the right sounds/samples + a quality delay and verb are all you need. An MPC plus say a Moogerfrooger analog delay and any keyboard/VST synth on earth really is all you need.

In my particular case I have a very low latency audio interface so my delays are all VST as I can run them in real time with hardware easily. I tend to rock 4-8 delays at once for the sake of versatility.

I have each one at different settings, some tempo synced, some not. Some old 70's bucket brigade King Tubby/King Jammy/Niney style, some more 80's digital like Scientist productions of that era.

But overall a lot of vibes music was/is made on very everyday stuff. Sleng Teng Riddim in 1986 is a cheap ass Casio. Classic dancehall is all whatever drum machines that were out at the time, heavy on the Roland x0x ones as you get to the mid 80's into the early nineties.

For dub it's whatever, acoustic drums, drum machines, again the main factor is knowing how to run sound through the verbs and delays and simulate crazy tape machine type stuff without tape machines.

And I just realized I wrote a serious post to answer a 2010 question...

But maybe another guy looking to make vibes will be helped. :-D

And the replies so far were hilarious y'all.

I've been looking at the El Capistan pedal for exactly this reason. I'm bored of delay plugins and might just go with some hardware instead.
