i just got a really ratty 2000xl studio on ebay. what to do?

and i finally, finally got one this year. i've wanted one for about half my life.

Has nothing to do with trolling, just seems awfully strange that you saw lots of issues and another buyer says it was just as described.

Seems a lot like you just felt you over paid and wanted a cheaper deal more than a bad unit.

The double tap is from the way you are hitting the pads , there is a knack to hitting them , it comes with time , but try quick on off tap , else if you are slow you get that Flam sound ... try the corner of the pads maybe ... your MPC sounds just fine .... get an SD Card reader and you are good to go , don't trust the zip they are unreliable , especially when old...
I wouldn't worry bout saving anything for the first month , just keep sampling, trimming, zoning , sequencing etc... fill up the ram have a jam , turn off and on ... expertiment ...

But above all try pressing OPEN WINDOW on every cursor movement on the screen , there are hundred of hidden windows and options that are not obvious at first ... enjoy

mine was a studio model too , and has the f/x card

i'm having a lot of fun with my mpc, though right now it's down. i'm in the middle of adapting the output board from my old s2000 and i think i botched the ribbon cable a bit, it stalls at "searching for disks" unless i have the output board unplugged from the motherboard.

but yeah a wonderful sequencer. the pads on this one are better, i'm familiar with the way you have to bounce off the pads but it's not hard to keep it from double triggering. sometimes i hit it with my thumb sideways the way one plays an arabic drum (dumbek). for now i play the pads with horrible rhythm and have poor control over velocity, but i will get better. also wish the metronome was slightly louder to hear it over my arhythmic flailing.

always hitting the open window. next time i have it working i have to look into the velocity-loop point modulation. my s6000 has that, but not enough to achieve outer space orbit flights. only little hops. but i think i own the most entertaining samplers in the world. some say "CASIO" on them. 0oo0o0

did you know that prunes are really just plums dried up? and raisins are dried grapes. and you can start a fire by rubbing some flint on a piece of metal. also salt water is denser than fresh water, so you need a bigger board if you are surfing on a lake or fjord.

Well it's good you were able to get a better deal that you are happy with and the original seller was able to resell the unit with no problems.

So it would seem everyone is happy.

Still just seemed odd because the unit had so many observed problems.

awwwwww yeah i got my 8 out board running. i had done a bad job putting the ends on the ribbon cable. it worked way better when i assembled held the ends in place over the cable, put everything in a bench vise, and gently tightened it down. of course i was careful that the top part of the connector wasn't on backwards to crush the pins. it is not symmetrical. see? useful information!

wish i'd taken pictures of that, i took pixx of everything else.

i opened the 47b. who knows if it was the last remaining new-in-box microtech ::] working on soldering the power connections right now inside the mpc. i pirated a nice hard drive power molex guy out of a beatup puter i found in a dumpster one day on a road trip. if i install a hard drive later, i'll look into tapping into another harness in there cause i don't know how much amperage the little floppy drive power circuit is rated for. i figure one of the six pins coming off the power supply board will supply +5 volts, but i don't have my meter here right now and i don't really need to do it that way for now anyway.

mpcs are easy to take apart. i need the rest of the screws that hold it together though. mine was missing a lot. i went to the hardwarez store and found a bunch of sheetmetal screws, that were pointed and of a coarser thread than the akai, and machine screws, which were the right form factor but the threads were too fine. i think our machines use coarse thread machine screws, if that exists. i saw on mpcstuff that you can buy the screws for like a dollar each. uhhhhhh

anyway back to my projects ::] ::]

oh oh oh i just used another meter and found 5 volts on that 6-pin connector. pins 4 and 5 are both ground (negative) and pins 2 and 3 (labeled "V1") are +5v. pin 6 seems to be -12 and pin 1 (orange) seems to be +12. at least according to my old analog multimeter.

oK now time to finish ::}

all right the pcd-47b seems to work perfectly. with all the jumpers off, it is scsi id #1 and (i think) terminated. strangely, with the same jumper settings it is scsi id #6 in my s6000. but i found a forum post i made back when i did that, saying i had set it to 1. ¿?¿?¿? maybe i am a koala.

anyway, with all the jumpers off, it works in my 2000xl as scsi-1. i set the default disk to that, so when i go to load or save, it goes straight to the compactflash card.

when you take off a jumper, stick it hanging off of just one pin so you don't lose it.

The 2000 is the one that's a headache to open because it's stacked, they learned from that mistake when they did the XL.
The internal layout of components is also better.

That's one of those things people forget to mention as improved on the XL over the 2000.
