Ableton 9 and Push Controller looks great!!

Gotta I was sitting in the living room watching tv and posting on the iPad and couldn`t remember the version of OS I had for sure. I plan to upgrade my computer the end of the year with hopefully the newest version of Logic probably coming out. I use both Live and Logic through I slight like the mix in logic better. But I love Ableton for the ease of slapping an Acappella in there.

Just picked up the Push controller...
I just can't keep waiting around for the Ren to catch up in the software department (it's tooooooo limited). Hopefully this is it and I can stick with it. I have used Ableton on and off for a few years so this controller seems like it would fill in the gaps. I hate working with a mouse for music making.

I need to get over learning the isomorphic keyboard layout for now.. I'm getting hung up on that. The controller hardware itself is very good at first impression. I just have to see how the workflow is for me. I'm already digging recording FX automation.... man I missed that over this last 9-10 months

Anyway there might be a Ren for sale soon in the for sale section, I've about had it with that thing...

I want to give it some more time... but I can already tell you that it's much better than the Ren for me so far.

Once I've had a week or so with it I'll give some more details. I'm digging into sampling and resampling in the next day so I know that is an area where people would worry the most about the differences between Push and an MPC so I'll try and make some comparisons.

Also keep in mind that there are some pretty awesome programmers out there doing some great things with the "User" mode on the Push, PXT Live is one example.

"Clip Chopping
Clip Chopping allows you to Chop Clips up. Each button in the Matrix used for Clip Chopping will be assigned to evenly
distributed Start positions based on the Clip’s length. For Clips that are Looping, the length will be based on the Clip’s Loop
Start and End Marker. For Clips that aren’t Looping, the length will be solely based on the Clip’s End Marker. Pressing a
button in the Matrix used for Clip Chopping will move the Clip’s Start Marker to the corresponding position and re-launch
the Clip. The Quantization to use for re-launching Clips can be selected via the Resolution buttons."

It also allows for banks of controls to be MIDI learned on the encoders.
Or the ability to perform step sequence functions on notes other than the drum rack
And many other cool things too...


If you want it to do something it doesn't, you can probably make it do it. That has a lot of value to me.

9.1 looks sweet! dual monitors, step sequencing for melodies. even controlling individual steps like the elektrons do!

Yeah that step sequencer is fun. A friend of mine brought over his Push setup and showed me whats up. It's really worth the investment. He's been making more tracks than I can keep up with.

I've been using STC drum mode for pxt live plus. The biggest benefits are it has 16 levels and mpc style note repeat where you can hold the button and repeat. By default the push's note repeat is an on off switch rather than mpc style note repeat.

How are you finding the push controllers? Everytime i go to use it i get like 5 to 10 minutes then a crash.. I've been using it on other setups..

Ableton has never been good to me everytime i try and use it on my own laptop.. I run it pretty lean to..

I love the clip session idea, just never had the chance to use it or save a session without it crashing...

I'm on version 9.1, win 7 x64, i7 920, 9GB of ram. Everything works even if I leave it idle.

What's your setup?

I know its a different workflow and ableton is more of a daw, but does push hold its own against the Ren or the maschine? If I'm making hip hop beats and just using mostly drum racks/samplers, and a few plug in instruments, maybe some audio tracks, how much mousing around do I need to do? Is browsing sounds, loading, chopping, sequencing, and mixing easy to do from the push on it's own?

Just a macbook pro 13 inch dual core with 8bg ram.. It's barely gets to any tracks/drumracks .. Maybe three or 4 then crash... No external plug ins.

I've used it with mp as just audio clips in session mode, and i;ll get it to around maybe 8 clips then crash....

It's never been a good experience for me... Kinda sad for me as i think i'd be a ableton user for just the clip session mode...

A friend i recently did some work with had abelton and push controller, We added some percussion stuff .. on his computer.. HE was running a 15 inch retina with 16gb.. Wasn't more than like 9 tracks( and 2 massive synths) .. We got about 8 bars of percussion then bang.. Crash...
