Would the VS8F2 cards still be worth picking up? (kinda urg

Im headed over to a not-close friends (so I can't like go digging through his stuff for hours on end) house to buy a VS1880. He has 2, one with a non-working play button and no FX cards (the button doesn't bother me, I MMC my recorder from my mpc anyway) and one with both effects cards.

He wants 50 for the one with no cards, 200 for the one with both cards.


This is a temp replacement (though it'll e a few months) for my DPS24. My main sources of sounds are my mpc4k/z8, integra 7 and live stuff (guitar, bass, vocals).

I'm a massive fan of reamping, whether with guitars or samples or synths. I would record dry either way, and was kind of planning on just laying down stuff and mixing/effects/mastering on the DPS, since its kinda my main squeeze these days.


So, what do you guys think about the VS82F cards? Are they still relevant? With the stuff I listed above, am I even really missing anything? The effects on the Roland are slick. It's one at a time (for inputs, anyway), but I also print my FX usually on virtual tracks.

So yeah, are those 2 cards worth $150 to you (thats pretty much what theyre going for on eBay, it looks like)? Would that money be better spent getting my dps24 fixed, maybe investing a an outboard processor (suggestions?)

Or I could go buy 150 bucks worth of tequilla and not care, I spose!?

you can get the vs8f -2 cards for very little money online. They sound just as good as the effects card in the mpc4000. You get a better range of effects with the vs8f-2 than you will with what is in the mpc 4000.
I would not spend that money on the cards. Just snatch the machine for $50 that is a steal.
Now the VS8f-3 card is another story. That card is wonderful. Sounds better than the 2 card and allows for plugins. It can be used with the 1880 once you update the OS.
You can get by with the effects in the integra. From time to time the vs8f-2 card is on ebay for $50 - $100.

Without the cards they are definitely less functional.
If it was me I would stall him out for a week while Imchecked eBay out.

You can usually find a 1680/1880 with a card installed pretty cheap.
If not talk him down on the one with the cards or tell him $200 for both of the units.

The real problem with the $200 price is you can find a DPS16 for that or less and stay i. The realm of whatnyou like and understand.

Ended up talking him down to 100 bucks and a pack of cigarettes for the one with the 2 cards. They sounded interesting, but I only got to mess with them for like 10 minutes.

I may end up selling both of these and getting a VS8F3. It sounds like they're phenominal, and to be honest, if those plugins are as versatile as they sound, I might end up switching over to a 2480. The single weakness of the akai is the FX are super dated.

I forgot to mention this...that hundo also landed me an official Roland VS1880 hardcase, a Samson C01, manuals, 2 power chords and a SCSI CD drive (which is actually super handy, the more I think about it). Crazy.

It's funny that the pack of cigs swung the deal.

Glad you were able to bring the situation back to reality.
Now you at least have a much higher comfort zone about the DPS being broken.

Once you get the feel for the workflow on the VS you should be back in business.
