Yes I agree, but usually I will have my individual tracks turned down as I'm tracking my beat, to be honest by the time the signal hits the volume plugin I'm usually 2-4 db under, every now and then the signal may jump to .2 but rarely. Sometimes I increase the volume of the the volume plugin so that I can overload my compressor so that I can get distortion if it sounds good (it depends on the plugin) but that's all subjective. Typically my signals (on each track) are pretty tamed, and I often turn the volume up on my interface until I start to get the processing the way that I want and then I will return my interface's volume to normal.
