But truly, god bless Nick Blatt and Sonic State's archives. Maybe redact the lines about "Jealous chumps who can't afford one..." if you do go through on the copy/paste of the 2002 posts.

The 5k isn't that bad, only issue I have is MIDI out D transmits a funny message when booting up that the Motif doesn't like.
I either have to turn the Motif on after the 5k boots or connect it to a different MIDI out.
The message doesn't affect the M50 or Fantom so either of them calm use that out instead of the Motif.

All in all I still like the 5k it's not the same as the 4k, but that's what makes it useable.

Sadly enough the used market on the 4k and 5k has tilted dramatically with all these used Renaissance units showing up for $600-800.

Secondhand 4K prices are dropping even further than they did a couple of months ago. I'd say that if you don't have one, and were ever interested in one, you have to buy it right now. As far as the Ren goes, it looks like people can't even give theirs away. Armen is selling them brand new at over $400 below retail. That should tell you something.

Looking good indeed. I wish mine was that clean. But at least the wear on mine is a testament to the build quality. 11 year old heavily used tact switches still going. And clearly the previous owner used the machine for years as his main piece in at least two states he lived in.

Thanks. I spent all day with it today. I keep finding myself surprised at how sophisticated the 4000 is and how deep its features go. Unfortunately the manual is the worst I've ever read. I felt like a total newb searching this forum all day trying to figure basic things out. Learned that round robin doesn't exist but that Clint found a nice work-around. Realized I'll never actually figure out how to get the drivers working. But thanks to you guys I made my first song.

I guess I sort of wasted $50 on the extra one-year warranty from GC. I have no intention of taking this thing back. On the other hand, I scored a Snoop Dogg CD which was loaded in the drive bay.

Anyways, this machine sounds fantastic and using it just puts a smile on my face. So I'm a happy member of the 4k club. Now we just have to convince tutor to do a proper manual.

Two things that are really helpful is the Newbie Bible here and going to the 4k Yahoo Group and downloading all the manuals and addendums.

If you print those manuals they are really helpful.

When I first got my blue 4k it came with a printed manual that looked like it covered a lot until I checked out the manuals there.
Akai did some manual tweaking and downsizing over the years so depending where you look you get a reduced manual.

Yessir. If I recall correctly, it sounds like you've gotten the drivers working on an xp image in vmware. I could probably manage it but I'm not sure it is worth the effort. What do you think?
