Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Hello,

I ran into my first (small) disappointment today when recording tracks off the 4K into a Roland VS880. I had some FX on 2 programs. When I want to assign an output to the program and try to record this into the 880, i have no sound. When i turn the fx send off however, i get my sound (except without the akai fx).

So, the workaround would be to keep those programs on the main outs instead of one of the individual outputs? Or am i skipping/forgetting something obvious?

Thanks for the reply!

I don't have and have never used the analog 8 out board on 4k.
I use adat (8 digital outs) on mine. I am able to push 4k effects (yes, I have the effects board installed) through any of those adat channels. The analog 8 outs don't work that way?

Okay, I'm still thinking about upgrading the 4K with the IB-4ADT except.... The thing will cost me more than $300.
But having the option to use and send FX through the digital domain would be very useful. Thanks 4 the info on this, appreciated!

I have been using the optical adat board for years (my whole lab is optical, audio, no analog audio except my emu turbo phatt) but still when I read the thread I went right to it and tried it out again to make sure I wasn't crazy, still crazy, but it works. Still I have no advice to give on the 4k analog 8 out.

If you have the 8 out board I'd check again and make sure to touch on every setting that the fx could possibly touch before coming to a final conclusion.

I placed different drum samples on pads 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Turned up the effects send all the way on each in the PAD mixer not the PART mixer side.

I set the pads to match the sends, a01= fxa, a02 = fxb, etc.

I matched pads with output channel, a01= adat1, a02 =adat2, etc.

I assigned different effects to fx a, b, c and d.

I heard all the different drums sounds play through the monitors with the correct assigned effect.

I will go back and see what happens with PARTS mixer when used with 4 PARTS as well. I used 1 PART for my above result.

The effects work with the 8 analog outs, you just route the effect to the individual out instead of the L/R outputs.

I went into PARTS mixer.

Seq1, trk1 is PART1, all drums
Seq1, trk2 is PART2, 4 samples that count 1234

PART1 send to A (reverb), OUT adat 1
PART2 send to B (delay), OUT adat 2

Didn't touch PAD mixer at all

I can clearly hear the different effects on both channels.

It works via adat.

As ntalec said, it may be a routing problem.

As different multi's/part's are opened/viewed in several different screens
effects disappear and reappear, irritating sometimes but you learn and get
through it.

One of the few true areas that the 4k gets you on is the whole effect/mixer/routing aspect.
They tried to make it flexible but it also made it odd.

I can go to the effects section on the other MPs (2kxl included) and use a modulation effect fed into a reverb tweak tweak tweak and get what I am after.

Not so simple on the 4k.
Also I like to run effects so they are the equivalent of pre-fader which is easily done on the other MPs.

Still not a reason to dislike the 4k just wish I could change it to have the choice of using a simple routing mode or flexible routing mode.

Exactly, no matter how many screens on my 2kxl the effects wouldn't drop out and in like the 4k. It's not a bug, it's routing, deep routing with immediate effects result on screens, lol, that's the best way I can describe it. I still wouldn't trade my 4k off for anything.

You can route the effects in the 4K to the analog outs. It's in the Fx buss section on the right.

It's definitely annoying until you get a feel for the safer ways to jump around the screens.

One strange thing I run into from time to time is stuff from the older MPCs sounding metallic when I load them in the 4k and add effects.
For the most part I find it easier to just use the older MPC that the song was made on than load it in the 4k and make the corrections.

True indeed, It turns out to be in the right side of the effects buss where you can choose to which output you want to assign the effect. TBH, I feel just a little stupid for overlooking this

The most strange part was that i felt like the 4K gave me a first no, but it really was saying: Think logical about what you try to accomplish and experiment.

Thanks for all the input people, it's the reason why i LOVE this forum and its users!
