What machine do you prefer for sampling drums? ASR vs MPC

The title says it all. What machine do you prefer sound wise for sampling drums (only)?

ASR-10 is my clear winner for sampling everything else then drums - there is no comparison sound wise and I really do love what that machine do to any sound I sample into it.

I own MPC3000 as well but I'm not sure on drums yet. I think that 3000 is more punchy and generally feels "better" on drums, while ASR feels more colorful but is less punchy than the 3000. But it has "that" sound that can't be achieved with any other machine, period, and I really do love it's specific sound.

Please share your opinion in this subject in the poll or comments bellow. Please only people who actually own ASR + MPC(60/3000) combo by themselves or have real life experiences with these machines. Cheers!

Yes, the only. I'm interested in ASR / 60 / 3000 comparison on drums only.

My opinion of the three.

ASR can make your drums homicidal if you know how to use the effects and filter with the right sample rate.
No such thing as drums on the ASR not having punch.

MPC3k has the right output level to make you drums bang different from any other MP but you pretty much better use the filter on everything you sample, it makes the samples sit in a certain type of sound pocket.

MPC60 is good for those old boom bap sounding drums.
They won't give you that knock like the MPC3k will but that's not to say they are weak.
They will give you some good feeling drums but with a different type of impact from what the MPC3k gives.

If the 60 had the filter of the S950 that would dramatically change what you can get out of it but Akai passed on that option.

The reality is it depends on what type of drums you are trying to achieve on a track and how much work (or time) you have to put in.

One last thing that is a major factor.
Your editing of drum samples in association to your sequencer trigger has a lot to do with how they hit.
I love the "Best Start" function on the old MPCs when it comes to drums.

Thanks mate for sharing your opinion. I agree with you basically with everything you said. Especially about ASR, I think I need to improve my skills with this beast. I was using my 3000 for everything in the past, but since I got the ASR I use it basically for sequencing only. The sound of ASR blew my mind the first time I used it. I love this machine.

I suppose there is no added value in this thread for the community hence I'm going to delete this thread. The ASR-10 is the only sampler I've ever heard in those blind 'sampler shoot outs' where I've thought "WOW, I need that sound". I've just never had the space for one.

I'm going with the MPC500. With 4 band EQ and Low, High and Band pass filters, you can make a flat-ass drum break into a glutinous pair of cheeks suffering from gigantism.

While I'm convinced that all of those three samplers sound great, I think I'd get nice analog effect boxes (tube amp distortion, for instance), compressor, EQ, etc. and send output thru them and to have my own subtle vintage sampling sounds.

Case in point (a bit sidetracked), DJ 45 king has been using Logic Pro for long time (I think "Stan" beat and "Hard Knock Life" beat were both produced with Logic Pro), but He's never lost this sound, his beat has been always punchy, funky and nice analog feel to it, regardless of how he produced them.

A lot of times I resample into the MPC3000 so I can work on a song away from my desk.

Casio FZ-1 / Roland S750 for pads.

I just picked up an EPS16+ which I look forward to checking out. That has a similar sound to the ASR-10?
I'm excited to check that out due to the modulation possibilities.

IMO the EPS, EPS16, ASR10 and ASRx all sound quite different.

How did you find the EPS jimmie? Do you still use it?

How about an ASR and MV-8000 combo!
