8gb cf card

just a quick question. i bought a 8gb cf card today. know i now it can only format up to around 2gb. but my question is, if i fill it with sample packs from my pc (not my mac) will it read all the packs i put on it ? i dont want to save anything else anything else on it, just use it as a sample pack cf card. im running a 2000xl with os 1.20 amd the card is a san disk. cheers for any input.

If the files from your sample pack are in the correct file format then your MPC will read them.

Otherwise you will have to manually convert them to be recognized by the MPC.

I presume that you have a MPC-2000XL with IDE CF reader installed.
If that's the case, then I think that 8GB Sandisk CF card can be used with 2000XL (I've been using 2GB Sandisk CF card), but maximum partition size is only 1GB (which is not that bad, actually.)
You have to make partition using your 2000XL, NOT your Windows PC.

You might know this already, but you must turn off your 2000XL before removing the CF card (this is because 2000XL sees CF card as a hard drive, so CF card must be connected before booting, until XL is turned off.)

After that, you can connect the CF card to your PC, built your sample library on your CF card. But remember, all the folders and files must be in DOS format, that is, file and folder name must be 8 chars or less, otherwise, you'll loose data! (2000XL let you name data files longer than 8 chars - don't do it!)
Use only alphabet (file system is not case sensitive, of course) numbers. You can use hyphen (-) and underscore (_) as well.

Other advice, don't use Macs for import samples, because mac will create a lot of invisible files and folders on CF card.

MPC-2000XL can read WAV files that are in 16 bit, stereo or mono.

Thanks for the recap though, i had forgot some of that stuff you mentioned (8 chracters etc) but do you think if i fill it with sample packs using my pc (i read allready about the ghost files doing it with a mac) that it would be able to read and load the files past the 2gb limit ?

MPC-2000XL can only make 1GB partition on CF card, not 2GB. (I heard that, with SCSI CF reader, 2000XL can make larger partition, I forgot if it was 2GB or 4GB, but not with IDE non-swappable CF reader.) So even though you are using a 8GB card, you can only use 1GB of the card.
But again, 1GB is not that bad. You can always import wav files that you need later, and delete files that you don't use. I don't find keeping it under 1GB to be difficult, certainly much, much better than using floppies or ZIP disks.

MPCHunter is correct. if you read carefully what he wrote, it sounds like the operating system determines the number of partitions possible. also, the type of reader factors in also. I have 2 readers which I use. One is non-hotswap which I use with my mpc2000 and mpc2000xl. with mpc2000 and os1.72, I can create a maximum 16 1gb partition using a 16gb cf card. with mpc2000xl and os1.14, I can do the same. I also have a hot-swap reader that does the same with the same setup with the added advantage of being able to swap out cf cards. but not all card readers out there give you the same results. 1.20 will restrict to 1gb regardless of cf card size.

JVC provides useful information (that many overlook) regarding file systems and length of file and folder names. very useful information.

I have a buddy who recently bought a multi-slot card reader from a shop in Chicago that works nice with his mpc2000/mpc2000xl but only the pcmcia slot works and the cf cards are recognized there. It is hotswap and works with cf cards up to 16gb. but my buddy's samplers are most likely using the os's mentioned above. but that's ok because the card reader is hotswap.

Not quite...

1.20 will only FORMAT a memory card in an IDE/ATAPI card reader to a maximum single partition of 1GB.

1.20 will RECOGNISE more/larger partitions, if formatted in a SCSI card reader, or IDE/ATAPI card reader on an earlier OS.
