Vialixi License Name Change Thread: Why the Lock?

I too have Vailixi and if I were to sell my MPC, I would like to be able to assure the buyer that this is possible. After all, it was a service that Rohan offered. So why the lock?

Yes I know about the bootlegs but the OP in the other thread offered a perfectly valid question.

Not sure who locked it, but I assume it's because there's been a recent history of people pirating the Valixi ROMs, and it's a touchy subject.

Regarding changing the 'licensed to' details, I'm sure anyone with a bit of knowledge can change the text. However changing the text doesn't change who the actual 'licensee' is, as typically you would need to contact the 'licensor' (Rohan) first to request the transfer and have the records updated.

So unless the original license agreement said that by selling the ROM to a third party the license was automatically transferred, with you as the licensee, it is unlikely that you have the legal right to tell the buyer that you have 'transferred the license to him'.

I do appreciate that this is unlikely to ever be an issue in the real world, especially given the way that the licensor appears to have disappeared, but you might be better off leaving it and let the new buyer handle it. Either way, it's going to cost you to hire someone to change it.

Mine still has the last owners name on it and I've gotten used to it by now, so I'm sure whoever buys it will do the same (do they really have much of a choice?). I'd not sweat it too much.

Rohan personalized each set of eproms with the owners info, you have never been able to change that, much in the way JJ controls the machine ID and authorization.

If you sell or buy a unit with his chips the next owner will always be reminded of who paid for the OS.

Thank you that is a very clear and concise answer and I now remember that was indeed the case. The license needed to be transferred via the author. So I suppose the question is still valid but it probably infringes on the EULA for this product.

I don't remember Rohan ever changing or transferring any eproms from the original buyer and that was all the way back to the beginning before people started cloning them.

It was part of his original method from day one.

He certainly did offer this service. On his business site, it still addresses this in the FAQ.

I remember you would contact him about buying a unit and being able to get discounted upgrades same as the original owner but I don't remember him sending a new set of eproms to change the machine info.

Not correct.

You can read the ROM image into a computer, change the text, and write it back to a new (or erased) set of ROMs.

You didn't say anything about Rohan not doing it, and the question was whether it was possible, not whether Rohan did/does it.

I am just making it clear to others, no idea WTF you are arguing about, and don't really care.

You need to read back through the thread since you are only seeing what you think not the post in the thread.
