I originally reported a bug about the portamento operation:
http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php ... &start=150

The portamento only works when note durations overlap.
JJ says this is how it's meant to work. So i've had a look at portamento on some other synths, including those in reason and some free vsti's. This is what Ive discovered so far:
The reason synths and on the vsti crystal, portamento is applied whether or not the note durations overlap. Im sure my emu sampler behaves like this too although i haven't tested it yet.

Iblit and Polyiblit work like the current mpc portamento, in that it only glides when notes overlap but not if theres any gap between notes.

I prefer the first method but appreciate other opinions may differ. I haven't sent anything back to JJ yet cause I thought it'd be good to discuss it here first. A choice betwen the two modes of operation would of course be ideal.

yes. i wouldn't want it one way or another. i can think of instances where both could be useful.

what you should do, if you REALLY want to sort this, is record a short audio example of you performing the "note off portamento" from reason, crystal, etc. document what is happening in text to accompany the picture (post it up here if you want help with the language)

then create a similar demonstration on the 1000 as it is currently coded. similarly, explain via text. clear and simple.

then suggest that both are useful in different applications.

i know it's a lot to ask, but do you think you can do this?

I am not that technical, but from my understanding how the mpc's have always dealt with polyphony and voices I can't see how the mpc will remember portamento once it has received note off or over different samples....

It's just a hunch...

yeah cool, that won't be a problem.
Will probably do it tomorrow cause i've got loads of work to do tonight!

hey,
This is the main jist of what i've sent to JJ using pretty much
the same terminology he used in the original email to me.I sent him some audio examples and some pictures too.

Using Reason: NNXT,Subtractor,Maelstrom: portamento works after releasing a pad.
Using some VSTi e.g. Crystal VSTi: portamento works after releasing a pad.

It would be good if the user could choose the type of operation:
portamento1(note on only) or portamento2 (note on or note off)

create an account at http://www.photobucket.com and use the image code that's provided there after uploading your pics.

simple workaround that even gives you additional portamento control: play an advancing "dead note" to set the initial pitch for the portamento.

have fun tweaking!

thanks for the file upload info guys...

with regards the workaround : thats really cool for programming but i don't see how it'd work for jamming etc.thanks nevertheless!

also when i tried to email JJ it just bounced back at me, so i sent it to the bug report page but without the files attached.

Hi everyone,

First of all, I'm sorry for reviving this 5 year old thread - I decided to post here, since I searched for a solution for Crystal's strange default behaviour with MIDI, and this was the first link I hit. I searched the Crystal homepage/manual, and, well, just in case anyone else encounters the problem, here's the solution:

To the top left of Crystal's menu, there are the 3 volume control sliders, aswell as buttons to enable/disable each of the voices. Below that, you can find a button. Depending on the current setting, it's labeled "Poly" (when disabled), "Poly12", or "Poly24". To the right of this button is the "hidden" menu. It's default label is "Copy", I believe. It can be used to duplicate the voices and such, but, you can also select the legato modes there.

Depending on what you want Crystal to do, you can turn portamento and mono mode on and off. I think it's slightly bugged, but after a few clicks it should work =)

EDIT: In fact, only one of the modes can be active at a time
