I am taking this time out to give thanks to Akai and the Ren development team, I have noticed that Akai is really listening to the buying public and forum members. A while back I posted this list of suggestions for the Ren and as you can see many of them have been added or addressed. I am happy to know that Akai is listening and responding to the users.

1. LAST UNSAVED SESSION - THE REN SHOULD HAVE AN AUTO SAVE BACKUP SYSTEM THAT SAVES UP TO THE LAST MOVE THAT THE USER MADE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. AFTER A CRASH A SOFTWARE PROMPT SHOULD APPEAR ON SCREEN ALLOWING THE OPTION TO OPEN THE LAST UNSAVED SESSION. (ABLETON LIVE DOES THIS WELL).

Fixed ....2. UNDO/REDO Bug Fix (The undo button is unreliable it randomly erases multiple past moves at times.THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR WORKFLOW SPEED. Usually after the undo function has wiped out the data the REDO function is greyed out and not usable.

3. Fixed........UNLIMITED UNDO - The user should be able to undo every previous move from the last time the session was opened.

4. The 16 Tunings section should have a pop up screen that allows you to adjust the root note/octave range of the sample. (This function would patch phrase the sample at the speed and length of the original sample so the user would not have to enter any tempo or bar length data).

5. Fixed .....16 TUNINGS AS DEFAULT OPTION Give the user the option of which function can be the default (the first function we see) tunings instead of being set on velocity etc.

6. Fixed .......FILE BROWSER Default Option - File Browser folders should save their positions when a template is saved.
7. Fixed .......AUTO PREVIEW - Auto preview should be defaulted to the on position or give the user the option to set it as a default.
8. TRACK EXPLODE - Convert a track with multiple sounds on it to multiple unused tracks, this is for those of us who program with more than one sound (kick snare and hats etc.). all at once on the same track.

9. FREEZE TO A PAD FUNCTION - The recorded vsti audio on a track is exported and assigned to a pad with exact position and timing. The option to assign the audio to a new program or existing program appears for the users choice. This will save on processing power skip the re-sampling process for faster workflow.

10. (not Sure?) VINTAGE MODE EFFECT OR BUSS - the vintage modes should also appear in the effects section to route individual sounds through the various vintage modes. This could also be an option on the track mixer to select which vintage mode the individual track will bus through (example, Track 1 Ring mode, Track 2 - MPC 60 mode, Track 3 MPC 3000 mode etc..

11. REAL-TIME TIME-STRETCH/PITCH-SHIFT FUNCTION - Real-Time time stretch/pitch shift option (see motu mach 5). Once audio tracks are implemented it would be great to have a melodyne type piano roll grid editor where you drag the sample up to take the sample up in pitch and down for lower pitch. The editor should also allow you to click and drag on the end of the sample to adjust its speed (drag left shorter time/drag right longer time). The samples should all adjust accordingly in speed when the tempo of the sequence is changed. (or at least WARP Capabilities).

12. AUDIO TRACKS with great visual and audio tools for recording and editing.

13. TRACK MIXER CHANNELS ADJUSTABLE SIZE - the track width should be adjustable to fit more tracks in view (a minimum of 24 - 32 viewable tracks). (see Ableton Live, Nuendo, Cubase etc..)

14. ADJUSTABLE TRACK ORDER IN TRACK MIXER - adjustable order of the tracks so tracks can be organized to the users liking. example : drums 1-8 , loops 9-10, keys 11-14, samples 15-20 etc..

15. VISUAL TIME STRETCH - IMO Nuendo has the simplest way of time stretching with an on screen view of the sample that the user can click on select time stretch and drag the sample end to a longer or shorter position on a grid. This should be visible while playing the sequence versus typing in numbers speed and tempo.

16. MULTI-CORE CAPABILITIES - for better processing efficiency.

17. 64 BIT SYSTEM.

18. (Addressed but could be improved) FX PLUG IN AUTOMATION
19. Coming in 1.5 (fixed) MIDI CONTROLLER TEMPLATE - for the MPC REN to control Ableton Live or other DAWs - Can this be set up currently, I am not sure?

20.. (Fixed) Drag and Drop Midi Files Into The Ren

21.. (fixed) PURGE SAMPLES NOT USED IN THE PROJECT

22. (addressed) SAMPLE FILE ORDER - Ability to sort samples alpha-numerically
23. NON-DESTRUCTIVE SAMPLE CHOPPING

24. LOCK SLICES ( see RECYCLE)

25. (Addressed) DROP AND DRAG A SAMPLE CHOP- In sample edit mode develop a method of showing the target program on the same screen and allowing the user to drag to the preferred pad.
26. SAMPLE BPM INDICATOR - Shows the BPM of each sample

27. (not Sure) MIDI CHANNEL INSERTS - for midi fx such as stutter edit etc..

28. (Addressed) PIANO ROLL NOTE INDICATOR - shows which note is pressed.

just sayin!!

but yea, its nice that they're listening! the ren has already come a long way

As always, post these in the bug report thread IF you would like to see them fixed. I can't faithfully reproduce undo/redo bugs in 1.4.

I suggest opening up the Command History when using the Undo/Redo function as you can see what action will be reversed. One thing to keep in mind is that Undo can reverse a single action or a series of actions (such as remove all events you just recorded in a sequence)....

Most major bugs I found and reported to Akai were promptly fixed.

I think they have one ear open to requests that are not particularly resource heavy.

They definitely are listening. There's no doubt about that.

Multicore and full fx automation next please :-D

A proper mixer where I can buss my stems/groups and mix with plug ins would be a real blessing too but I fear that might take a bit longer to implement...Maybe 2.0?
