mpc 2000 no sound from pads?

hey guys I got offered a mpc 2000 for free from one of my friends problem is when you sample no sound comes out the pads. He said he took it to a tech and they said the pad sensor is fine . i midi'd up my s950 with my mpd to and the 2000's sequencer worked fine . if any one has any suggestions what might be up with it feel free to drop some knowledge. thanks in advance.

did you sample, then assign the sample to a pad in the program menu? when you go in the trim screen can you trigger samples by hitting a pad?

my bet is yer just not assigning / monitoring correctly, but even without sound, for free it makes a killer sequencer for yer 950.
