What's the most expensive genre of music...

...To dig for and collect? (Besides library records)

I've always wondered this. I mean I used to be into prog rock, but I just can't afford the shit most of the time. It's one of the genres of music round here that commands high prices. I look in thrift stores and charity shops and strike gold. More exciting than going into a record store. It's the thrill.

Another one that is stinking expensive to collect and dig for is what is classed as 'northern soul' round here. IMO it's the nostalgia and memories which mainly drives this. The nostalgia of this soul music from my mothers generation. My mother telling me memories of northern soul 'all-dayers' in Leeds and Manchester. Most northern soul collectors I see are old men. Maybe when the baby boom generation die off the prices will go down?

Turkish and South American psych is always expensive. But damn I love me those exotic tunes that make the Beatles shit sound like Jah's beat. So I cough up for the good shit. I have to anyway, I'm Ill Green ****.

psych rock can get expensive, especially if you're on the soviet russia cold war tip . but it is all relative, I would say jazz/funk/soul though in terms of overall most expensive for rarities and amount of artists. lots of blues too.

I suppose it's harder to get Soviet vinyl in America than here in the UK. I see Soviet records and Eastern European records quite a lot. Then again my city has a large Eastern European community.

Guess that's the advantage of living here in the UK. Better access to Euro-jazz/funk/soul. Then again you cats have access to records I'd love to get my hands on.

what I wouldn't give to spend a week digging through europe's record shops... I'm going to france this summer for school and Im just going to fck off from the group and spend awhile digging

Jazz! The music is timeless and collectors know it. When I switched from RnB and Rock/pop to jazz, I was like wtf. It doesn't help that in the 90s famous producers sampled mostly jazz. They drove the damn prices up and then switched genres.

Especially if you're collecting records from labels such as Blue Note (originals). Records linked to Miles Davis and Coltrane seem to command high prices too. British jazz seems to have a dedicated middle aged/old, middle class collector community as well. You can never really out collect nerdy old people with lots of cash and nothing else to do. These old comic book guy types look at us, 'the hip-hop generation' like dirt. These are the dudes with the real money.

Again I guess when the baby boom generation start kicking the bucket and interest lowers the prices will lower.

There are a lot of obscure jazz records around in charity shops and thrift stores cheap though. It's possible to find jazz in the wild. Be surprised how many people die and their records end up out in the wild again.

I know you said it in the o.p......but **** library records! One, just one time I would like to find a good one in my city or in any cities dollar bin.

Any Record with a Classic/ heavily sampled drumbreak on it....

Oddly enough, if yr talking TOP dollar stuff I'd have to say Rock, there's more demand for the rarities, almost all of the most expensive LPs are rock bands like Led Zep (one, w turq. letters), Beatles (butcher cover), Dylan (Times are a changing with extra tracks).

But yes some of those psychedelic/imports are pricey. We have a place in town that has a whole "psych" section, with lotsa of king Crimson, Gong, hawkwind, etc...IDK if they do online sales, but if you want to look into it I could give you the name. Its a small place and sells records/cds so not gonna walk out of there with anything good for dirt cheap, but Ive bought some used psych LPs there for lime 5-10 each. Things seems to be in decent to ex condition there.

I love prog too, have u had much luck sampling/flipping it? Def love to check anything out....

Yeah, I've found some jazz stuff around but it's usually the fast stuff people don't want. Lol.

A lot of history in Euro jazz. That's probably why it's so collectable. I mean Stalin banned jazz from the air in Poland when he was alive. I can bet theres a lot of shit that happened that we don't even know about before the 60s
