For example... can I use it with hardware and not at all with a computer what so ever? Can I open it up new from the store and take the installation dvd and stick it right into my paper shredder... and use the controller with fl studio, reason, ableton, etc?
as i understand it - no.. in order to use the element OR the Ren OR the studio as a midi controller you must first open the software, then go to controller mode

maybe the element is different
well glad I didn't buy it then.. cause the controller would be following the disk into the shredder.
you see, that is what I hated about some of those novation keyboards and controllers.. it required automap to act as a server between the controller and anything. cool, you can create pages of presets and templates..... so you can assign one button to 100 things and cycle through to the one you want. ie: 100% useless without a computer.
even on the mpd16 I use the midi output to the soundcard's input to bypass the need to install akai software (which blue screens the computer). I actually use the usb to power the thing... but it's blocked on the pc.
