Memory and Internal Hard Disk Installation?

Thanks to all other users who have posted some information about suitable memory for the mpc 4000. I can confirm that Kingston KVR100X64c2/256 does the trick-you just have to push it down hard!

I am still having difficulties with the hard drive- whenever I plug in the power lead to the MPC the fuse in the MPC blows (this causes 'the black screen of death') I think that I may have to hook up the grey jumper slave/master cable on to the MPC board just above where the power outputs are- but don't know which of the two options to choose.

There is currently a little white plastic linkage that occupies the two left hand pins, on the right is a pin that is unused with a little indicator that says 'prog' joining it with the middle pin. should i plug the slave/master jumper cable to the left/centre pins or the centre/rights pins?


Any further help about hard drive installation and CD writer installation would help me out alot at the moment. The CD writer I picked up also blows the fuse in the MPC when plugged in.

PS. The had drive I have is a Western Digital WD800, Mod. # WD800JB-00JJAO.

Are you sure about the DIMM stick?

I got a Kinston KVR133X64C2/256 (a 133 speed instead 100), and it didn't work. And indeed, it only has 8 chips, instead of the needed 16.

Btw, this fuse blowing thing doesn't sound good at all! Are you sure you're following the instructions from the manual? Looks like you have a serious problem with your power leads. Did you plug them correctly on the main board? Did you notice the little marker on the connecter? There's only one way you can/should plug them on the main board.

Yes I am 100% positive about the dimm stick. IT WORKS. and I have double checked the way I am plugging in the power cables. I haven't upgraded from the very first operating system yet and I am hoping that this might make some difference.

Yes, the Kingston models you have are the ones we installed at AKAI, and are the ones I recommended and use.

The jumper setting on the HD should be MASTER. The jumper setting on the CD drive should be slave.

When you say the fuse blows, do you mean you have to replace the fuse? Or does the unit just power off until you disconnect the Power cable from the HD?

I think the problem could be a short in the power cable or the IDE cable. Take a careful look at the cables, you may have knicked one of the cables, and when it comes in contact with the chasis of the MPC and it is powered up it will cause the unit to immediatly shut down.

So does the KVR100X64c2/256 DIMMS have 16 chips, while my KVR133X64C2/256 has 8 chips? My stick only reported half the memory installed (128 instead of 256) so I took it out..

yes, the KVR100X64c2/256 DIMMShave 16 chips 8 per side, I am not sure about the 133 I will need to look it up.

OK I just looked up the PC 133 Kingston model on www.kingston.com
According to their site the PC100 model is double sided and the PC 133 is not. That is the reason your MPC sees only half of the memory.

Ah, that explains it. I'll get the PC100 version then.
