MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

So I am reading "beatmaking on the mpc 5000" and just read about the "attack bug" where the MPC REDUCES attack the harder you hit a pad. Is there a patch/fix for this. I assume the work around would be resampling the pad at different volumes with ASDR adjustments then play them at FULL ON, but that seems like a lot of extra work.

I wonder if there was any truth behind the version 3 OS rumours, and if it will ever surface.

Waste of a dream I'm afraid :?

In summary:

* MPC5000 gets released and slated by Just Blaze as a POS
* Akai release 2.0 as to appease people/pr stunt/ etc
* 2.0 is riddled with bugs, all of which are carefully and meticulously reported to Akai by the community
* no fixes ever come
* Akai continues to sell the MPC5000 for many years, knowing it is riddled with bugs
* Akai support staff continually make statements suggesting updates are on their way
* Akai release new MPCs (ironically with software based directly on the 5000 OS)
* During marketing campaign for new MPCs and under pressure from a room full of video cameras, a vague comment is made about how it 'would be great to revisit the MPC5000'
* After wiping the tears of laughter from our eyes, most of us would rather know why they didn't bother fixing the bugs during the MPC5000's 'active' period, when we'd all just dropped £1000 on the thing and were trying to use it.

I think the point many people miss is that it doesn't actually matter if they released OS3 now, the time has passed, the damage is done and most people have sold their 5000 to some other sucker. People needed their support years ago when 2.0 was clearly in need of a 2.1 update. Why didn't Akai care enough to make this happen when people really needed it?

Tell us how you really feel! LOL. Just giving you a hard time.

I'm still a die-hard MPC 5000 user, but I agree 100% with your post. An update is way past usefulness for those that sunk their hard-earned cash into it (and since sold it).

And it's unfortunate that they even teased an update, or "revisit" to the 5000. Don't think it will happen anyway, but really sleezy marketing.

I'm predicting the same fate will fall upon the Ren in less than 12 months from now - discontinued still with missing features and bugs. But that's just my .02, that might only be worth .01. :-) It's hard to change the culture of a company.

Good for them that they have die-hard fans of their products.

People interested in picking one up cheap now, who weren't burnt after originally buying one, or those who did get burnt but still have them, might want the upgraded OS.

Most probably not going to happen, anyway, by the looks of it.

Great summary of the situation. I think the thing that was most insulting was Akai's product manager stating as late as last year, here on this board, that a 5000 update was still on the table. He did this only to generate goodwill during the launch of the Renaissance. This behavior was unethical and inexcusable. I've worked in Product Management for 15 years for some very large companies. Promising features or updates to users is a cardinal sin, especially when it is used to gain favor with a community of users.

Yep. Not a good look by akai product management. And yes I'd definitely still want an update, as long as it didn't introduce a boat load of new issues and bugs, but that goes without saying.

Let's make it even funnier.
When they were releasing the 5k they threw us a 4k update bone the same way.
So to help the 5k release they made us think we would get a 4k update.
Then to help the Ren release they made us think we would get a 5k update.

Are you serious? My god...it's like a culture of questionable ethics.

That's why I'm not gonna kiss their ass until the development cycle is finished, and we can see what state MPC Software is left in when they drop it and move on to something else.

That's too bad...I know others had a mpc software by a third party (JJOS), maybe if there's enough need he'd consider the mpc 5000, I certainly pay for something just to fix that problem.

I think that there has previously been speculation that he might only have had the source code for the 1000 and 2500, so would not be able to.
