I don't know if this is a real simple question but here goes....
I am trying to make my beats with a real "full" sound....and I was wondering something about frequencies...first off I have my kicks layered with an 808 that I put around 5-10 in the frequency range, with the resonance up a little....the other kick it is layered with is sometimes around 80 to 90. Let me know if this is to wide a range of frequencies for just the kick....I want it to punch...and they do sound allright like this but I don't want to cancel anything else out, ie melody, other drums, etc....
secondly I wanted to know if using that low end theory on my melodies would cancel out the low end of the 808....if anyone could give some advice I would really appreciate it....one

I Would recomend EQ`ng youre sounds instead ... the HP filter in the MPc only removes frequnces .. good for filterìng out highs when makeing basslines ...

Record all tracks/ samples separatly and EQ them in a External mixer or in youre computer

Peace!

well, between 70-80hz it should punch more. on the parametric eq i usually have two freq spots on the low end. sometimes two around 85/90 or sometimes 1 between 10-30 and 1 between 80-90.

i wouldnt exaggerate the low end too much. might start to get muddy. when twerkin your melodies, try adjusting the mid-range more towards the high end and it should make it shine a bit more. i highly recommend using a parametric eq. its really easy to find trouble spots and tweaking them to sound good.

yo BigStu!

I don't know what ya mean by 'low end theory'. Do know that you could make your kicks kick even harder if you make sure your other sounds aren't kreeping down into the same frequency range. (Use eq like others suggested.) This usually shouldn't be that big a problem until you hit the bassline.

no monitors can produce 30 hz and under.

you should highpass at around 30 anyway...tightens the bass up no end...

you need a LOW PASS to filter out the highs....

if you want it to have that PUNCH just layer it with a snare. You should add some light reverb aswell, light enough that you couldnt hear it but if you bypass it youll notice the difference! Oh and never ever boost your eqs!! ALways subtract than boost..... maybe a 1db boost but that is it nothing over it. Layering and effects is the key!!!!

thanks for the tips......I have been layering my snares with kicks lately....it does make them punch real nice.......some dude also told me not to get carried away with the compressing and eq until after I lay it down in pro tools.....I was mostly wondering what I can do while I have the beat in the MPC.......thanks again for your suggestions.....

"Oh and never ever boost your eqs!!"

You can use eq to completely change a sound and create your own. It depends on what you're trying to do. There are no rules man. Experiment. Do whatever you feel. Be original.

yeah,

i would put your kick samples on a disk and load them up in soundforge, or whatever software you have. Mess with the eqs.

WHen it comes to kicks usually there are few things to worry about. One you have to worry about how it interacts with the bassline, and another kick. You also have to worry about any other LOW end sounds, like maybe an organ, or some dark strings.

essentially, you dont wanna take away too much from anyone instrument....i mean, you can cut alot of bass on a kick, and not do anything to the bassline, but you might not feel the kick as much or vice versa....it all depends on the track, and what will sound good. so really you want to take a little from each, andmess with it like that...same goes with the other sounds, figure out what you want to stand out, and how you want to eq the sounds so they bump.

btw. i also use the eq to create differant sound kicks..i might not neccessarily tighten it up, until i start working with the track.
