that though wasn't the real subject of the debate but think we can both safely agree to disagree on that one...

ok so scratching is a sound and there is an argument (usually from pretentious classical composers) that any sound can be used in music but mashing some records together and playing a musical instrument is not the same thing and does not produces the same results...

probably best see the record player as it is, a playback device that can be manipulated but not played......im not sure many dj's would actually agree that the deck is a musical instrument....all the good ones i know do not see it that way...

hmmm .. depending on the speed of the scratch and what is being scratched then my friends it is an unstrument but only when being used in that sense. yiur fingers have to control the record & the faders with precision and practice & in time to the beat - if thats not musical then you got rocks in ya head! but everybodys entitled to their opinion!

putting a needle on a record and letting it spin - well yes then it is a player but if you can make different notes and sounds come out of it by physically manipulating it then we have an instrument!

yes a dj is a musician. A beatmaker is also a musician. last time i checked hip hop was MUSIC hence Djs and producers would be MUSICIANS. some cats cant read scales or whatever but there is timing, rhytm, tonality, and pretty much everything a country musician to a orchersta is doin.

a machine and start banging beats on stage on the first day. would you play a guitar on stage after your first lesson. Beat making is like learning a new instrument. at first you'll do some real basic **** and as you progress
your beats get tighter, if you play guitar your solo's will get faster as you progress. sure anyone can do a boom chak in minutes, even a newbie, but he's still in the musical process, thinking like a musician, and not like a technician or engineer. It's a thin line but for me anyone who's trying or succeeding, learning or an expert, if your in the musical process, your a musician.

fair enough- ive yet to hear a dj coax a proper musical phrase out through scratching...loads of wierd ass sounds which are cool but nothing scritcly musical in an instrument sense...think people are getting confused here...we were talking musical instruments and i dont consider any old noise maker to be an instrument whether its used in music or not..otherwise you could argue any noise maker is an instrument which isn't really true...

A percussive instrument, just like the piano.

scratchin is percussive and rhtymic. There is also use of tones via the pitch fader. To say that scratchin is not a instument or musicical expression would be like sayin the timbalas are not an instrument or a wood block or vibraphone or shakers. Its not a lead instrument like they keys but it is music.

Just a little something for y'all to think about...

Music is organized sound. A musician knows how to organize sound.
Whether it's on the piano or on the mpc or whatever doesn't matter... That's just my opinion.

Have you guys peeped those Stomp dudes that play beats and stuff with everything from tea cups to sounds from chewing on an apple. Well, I consider that music and the dudes musicians.

yea....it dosnt seem like that though.

id probably call them more talented then musicians, but your probably right!

well a conductor could possible play every instrument in the orchestra. 9 times out of 10 the conductor is the nicest musician in the house.

So true, but here's my thought

A musician is anybody who MAKEs or PLAYs music.

Someone who samples MAKE music, someone who plays sumthin like trumpet, saxophone, drum, etc, PLAYs music

So both to me are musicians cuz they are involved in music sum how. I think some DJ's are musicians and some aren't, depends on if they flippin and mixing music in their own unique way then yea, if they just puttin songs on in rotation then no.
