EDIT: Last one. Updated the OS X video for the mouseless rename solution on that platform. See later post in this thread for links to the files needed and referenced in the video.

EDIT: I Revised this to include the no mouse solution for Windows users (see vid).

EDIT: Typed all that below earlier, but just did a quick video if you want to skip all the reading...this is the first vid I've ever done so my apologies for the quality...

VIDEO FOR WINDOWS USERS: (good if you rename while you work)

VIDEO FOR OS X: (now can rename mouse free while working in OS X too!)

I go back and name everything mostly when I am done with the general framework of my project, so you can say I do my renames in "bulk". If you work like that (bulk renames) then this might be helpful to you....also this applies to OS X, but I'm sure there is a tool in Windows that can do the same...sorry for the length...this started as just a few steps as a tip, but turned into something else along the way...

In short, I use a free tool (BetterTouch Tool http://www.boastr.de/ ) that allows any keyboard key I choose to simulate a mouse click. When I go to rename the sets of tracks, I move the pointer over the 'Track' field and press the keyboard key I have mapped to enter edit mode for the field, type the name and press enter. From this point on I do not have to touch or click the mouse or look at the monitor to continue naming the rest of my tracks. I just navigate to the next track from hardware, hit the keyboard hotkey (I'm using F13), type the name and press enter (hardware screen then shows name), wash rinse repeat until all 'tracks' are named. The 'almost' part comes when I need to rename the Sequences because I do have to look at the screen to reposition the mouse over the Seq field. But I do it once and rename all the Seq in one shot, then move onto the Programs....obviously naming this way at the end is just how I work, but if you do bulk renames at any point in your workflow and don't like using the mouse, then this may shave off some movement...

Seems clumsy, and it is a little, but I rename things faster this way than having to look over and reach for the mouse, look up at the screen, click field, look down at the keyboard, then look back at the screen to make sure I'm typing it right, then back at the hardware screen...then look and reach for the mouse again, look up at monitor, navigate to the drop down to select anotehr track, click back in field to edit, look down at keyboard, up at hardware, back at monitor, etc...etc... for me it gets disorienting. Doing it this way, I can shift my eye only slightly from keyboard to hardware screen to see what I typed (of course it doesn't refresh until I press Enter, but its fast enough to just hit the hotkey and type it again if you have a typo). No physical mouse clicks or tilting my head up and down, only have to move the eyes no more than when working strictly on hardware.

Would be nice if Akai could implement something like this (I know its been debated here before ad nauseum about what way is better, but I think they could create a psuedo-hybrid method...). I noticed that whenever I press Enter on the keyboard, the Program drop down appears in the software. Since that proves the fields in software can at least respond to keystrokes, if possible, akai could allow the field selected on the hardware screen to get focus in the software (it sort of already does this when me navigate to the fields from hardware with the cursor bar to select tracks and programs usingthe jog wheel and +/-). If they could allow the field to respond to a configurable keystroke that places the field in edit mode (in the software) , that would allows us to type with our keyboards without touching a mouse or looking at the monitor. We wouldn't exactly be using the slow method of renaming letter by letter using hardware either. It's just a refinement of functionality that already exists--hence the psuedo-hybrid designation. I don't even care if the hardware screen doesn't show the actual letters as I type or appear as if its in edit mode (maybe flashing the field might help provide some feedback though), because I'd see what I typed right when I pressed enter and hitting the keystroke would be fast enough for me to retype it and press enter and move on to the next field...

Yes, I haven't used it yet, but will set it up to make sure it actually works and will post a video. If it works, this one is even better and eliminates the need for the mouse completely to do renames which would make it feel very close to, if not just like, renaming on the hardware....

I just have to setup my mpc on windows to set it up....about to do it now

looks like no luck in Windows (so far)....works in some programs but not others and of course the MPC Software is one of the ones where it does not work...would be cool if it did though, but it looks like the MPC software controls are not identified by the software as standard windows controls. It (MPC software) also seems to ignores most keyboard input on Win 7 and is only taking mouse commands directly from the mouse...

EDIT: This is weird...now it is working...let me fiddle with this a little longer to see what the deal is before posting a vid... if ths is not a fluke I might switch to using the REn on Win 7 just for this!

Bet. I'm interested in this because I tend to name all my tracks after I finished making a beat.

I finished the Video, but am having a problem uploading it from my phone...ios7 seems to have issues with youtube uploads...been sittting at 'publishing to youtube for over an hour', but I did get it working and renames can happen without touching the mouse or looking at the monitor in Windows....hoping to get the video up today...

Cool, what's the name of the program?

Here's the video

The free program is called AutoHotKey. For me this has proven even faster than the OS X solution. I'll have to find or tweak something to get it to work like this tool because I'm really liking this way...

Anyway, here is the additional script modifications I reference in the video below. Cut and paste and modify the coords for your display size. I also changed my script to use the windows key instead of shift since I forgot I may want to use capital letters and it will trigger the script. There's a way around that w/ addt'l code I believe, but I'm fine just using the win key...

Thanks fam. I'm about to set this up right now.

Edit: I got it all setup and running well. Thanks for the work you did. This is a time saver and will be put to use because I get tired of the whole using the mouse to click here or there to rename tracks and sequences.

Question: To rename a program you still have to use the mouse to right click? When I do Windows Key and C it just moves over the program and doesn't do anything else.

Hmmm...you shouldn't have to use the mouse at all for the rename. If you are trying to save or clear the program then yes, you would still need to right click to bring up the context menu in the MPC software (could program a script and map it to a key command to do that and select either option if you wanted to). If you are hitting your key combo Win+C and the click isn't happening, not sure why that would be if the other two are working fine (Track rename and Seq rename)... you prob already did this, but double check the script to make sure there is not a discrepancy in the text for the 'click' action for the Program rename portion.

When it moves to the program field is it in the middle of the field or on the edge? If on the edge, it may just be missing the field by a hair..in that case reposition your mouse so it is on the "p" in the word program and recheck your coordinates with WindowSpy and update to script accordingly. If the other two are working the program click should work w/o a problem too. It's kind of an all work or none work situation the way the software works...

Last thing to check, try changing to another letter like 'g' and see if you have success..you may be getting a conflict with the OS default combo...I didn't run into that though so there must be a way around it if that is the case

Last , Last things...what version of MPC spftware are you running? I've been assuming 1.5. I don't think it was changed, but I never noticed, but when you manually click in the program field in your software to get into edit mode, do you click once or twice? If twice, then you should add ",2" to the end of your coordinates in the rename program portion of your script...

That was my fault. I was trying to rename the program in a project instead of where the track is. All is well now. Thanks again for this.

No problem family, glad I can contribute something useful.

OHHHHHhhhhh...that explains it...truthfully, I never noticed you could rename from that list...I learned something new!! You can program the scripts to do it that way if you want, it's pretty much the same process, but it would more script steps and more coordinates to program and mouse move events to program. I used the program field because it was quick and I don't have to look at the monitor.

Keep in mind of you reduce your MPC software to window mode that will affect the coordinates and may result in them being off and the scripts to not function, but that likely will not be a prob since I doubt anyone works in a windowed mode....

Ok I got it working exactly the same on OS X...no mouse needed!

The setup is much more involved though to get there and uses multiple tools, but still uses the BetterTouchTool to bring it all together into a seemless flow...would be easier if it were just in the product, but for now....

Will revise the OS X video when I get a chance..probably not until this weekend...
