Midi Controller mode

Anyone got any info on this? The pads work in Ableton but that's it. Is there a midi implementation chartor a tool to configure?

did you also update your controllers firmware?

looks like more than just pads should work

I have the same question. I don't see the MPC Renaissance listed as a Control Surface in the Ableton MIDI Sync Preferences window. I started a question in the Akai community about it'; we'll see if anyone can answer me.

I think the new midi mode allows the MPC to work as a generic midi controller which you can assign individual pads/buttons to control functions in a daw. I know in logic there is a midi learn mode where you can select say the play button in Logic and assign it to which button you press on the MPC (in midi mode). So now when in midi mode, pressing that button would allow you to "press" play in logic.

I haven't really worked with the midi mode yet so someone correct me if i'm wrong.
I'm sure people will start working with midi mode and they'll be user templates for the various DAWs out there soon.

For a device to show up in the Ableton Live Control Surface list, it needs to have a specific MIDI Remote Script that is written for the device, and either included with the Ableton software, or provided by a third party, such as Akai.

Without a MIDI Remote Script, to automatically map the device controls to Ableton Live features, then it will not show up and operate automatically as a control surface.

Instead, you enable the MIDI input port to Ableton Live, from the MPC, as Track, for MIDI Note on/off control, and as Remote, for controlling parameters via MIDI CC messages, and you manually map the device controls to the Ableton features/parameters that you want to control from the device.

Its working a little bit better with the MPD scripts and MPK mini script. With the MPD script the pads trigger midi notes and so do the knobs (not control messgaes?), transport works ok. Theres two ports you can map to MPC public and MPC port 1. Looks like without an implementation chart the only way to figure out what type of messages are being sent is some kind of midi tool.

Looks like MPC Public is the USB port, seem like everything apart from transport is a played as a midi note

Are you in MIDI Controller Mode in MPC Software when testing it?

Use MIDI-Ox on Windows or SNoise MIDI Monitor on Mac to see what is going on in terms of MIDI data being transferred.

What you are seeing on the MPC Public post is probably the same MIDI note communication that has always been going on between the controller and software, just now the software is translating that to MIDI messages, depending on how it is setup in MIDI Controller Mode.

Maybe see if you can open the Ableton Live MPD/MPK remote scripts in a text editor, to work out what MIDI messages are assigned to what functions, so you can duplicate the same MIDI messages in the MPC Software MIDI Controller Mode.

Maybe even see if you can modify it to provide additional/specific functionality for the MPC.

I wish they have a template editor like Maschine has and this outside of the MPC software with GM templates, Cubase etc...
