hola stress,

I'm trying to put together a $5000 studio at the hs where I work. So I've given this some thought. This is what I'd go for, it's slightly adapted (using pro tools for you).

G4 something for $1000
Yamaha Monitors MP5 (? or something like that) $500 (or Mackie 824 $1000)
Digi 002 R $1000
Kurzweil Rumor $500 (the reverb plugs are the ones that eat all your power so why not go with hardware)
Pheonix 1 Channel Mic Pre $1000
SM7 mic $350 (if you use a dynamic with a nice mic pre you'll get as pro a sound as possible without a separate studio recording room)

You mentioned the mixer, the onyx looks sweet but are you recording a band or a drum kit? Even if the Digi has 4 mic pres and some other inputs.

I'd only go G5 (whew) if you were going to put down for Logic Pro 7. Which has a lot of effects and midi instruments which need lots of power. In protools you're working with audio. You can get away with a lot less. Good luck with it!
